Eric's favorite day of the year in Japan is Tanabata! Since 2014 we have headed over to Idabashi's Daijingū shrine to leave our wishes for the year and they always seem to come true! This year we had some rain which kept the crowds low but it was still as magic as always.

I really enjoyed that. I always liked the decorations that got put up around town for Tanabata especially in the City of Date in Hokkaido. It always seemed like a magical time of year. Also in Date, Tanabata kind of led into a street festival with food booths which then went on to the big city wide Musha Matsuri with nebuta, a horse parade and a huge shimin (sp?) odori which was like a big parade of groups of people dancing. Then right after that came O-Bon for like a week with dances at various locations each night and the hillside cemetery filled with candles, lanterns and incense burning each night. The whole thing is a great memory for me. This festival video brought all of that back for me. Thank you

Yea, that all sounds just perfect. Maybe I'll aim for that area this summer.....

Do you guys ever attend any local O-Bon festivals in Japan? When I worked in Tokyo some friends and I stumbled across an O-Bon dance pretty much underneath the Tokyo Tower. We were quickly invited to join in. It was very fun.

I've stumbled across them as well but we don't have a "place" we go, no. It feels like a too....spiritual holiday to get involved in as a couple of white people. Tanabata feels more accessible.
