I had the same experience when I moved into a couple of new areas in Hokkaido where people assumed I didn't speak Japanese. Thankfully after a little while when they came to know that I was a regular in the area the reaction changed. But sometimes the pendulum would swing the other direction where they knew I was local and assumed I knew way more Japanese than I did. So that was an issue as well.

Haha, yea, you get it periodically in other places too of course, but it's on steroids in Asakusa. Trying to come up with a way to respond that doesn't make anyone feel weird, it's a socially complex issue, especially as some people are pretty....dismissive of our ability to communicate. It's pretty weird. -E

At what point did Japan start to feel like home, rather than just a place where you were staying? Was there a particular incident that made you realise "this is home now"?
