My guest on this week's Sewers of Paris is Harvey Brownstone, who in 1995 became Canada’s first openly gay judge. Focusing his career on family law, Harvey helped shine a spotlight on Canada as a destination for same-sex couples to wed before it was legal in the US. But before all that, he was a young gay kid who’d been thrown out of the house, struggling through school, living on welfare, and searching for others like him.

OMG! Judge Harvey Brownstone married us in back in 2004, when it was totally illegal here in Texas. My HUSBAND and I are forever grateful to him, and will always have a warm place our hearts for Canada because of him. I’m glad to hear that he’s doing so well.

This is such a heartwarming story about someone who others looked down on but helped to make some important steps forward.

I can't say that Judge Brownstone married us, but Canada did! My wife & I went to BC in 2003, stayed at a lesbian-owned B&B and were married there by a wonderful woman magistrate. The registrar's office apologized that they hadn't had time to change the forms, so one of us would have to be the groom. Local merchants gave us gifts when they learned we were there to get married. It was such a wonderful experience! Love Canada!!!

The wedding was lovely! Unfortunately not the marriage. We divorced 10 years ago. At least I still have my happy wedding memories!
