Hello spookyfriends!

Thanks for your patience with this week's bonus video -- I was working on the Elvira video up until the last minute, and I'm just getting caught up on everything else now. (And if the video embed doesn't work for you, here's a backup link: https://vimeo.com/mattbaume/elvirabonus1 )

Here's some fun stuff that I found in my research that I didn't have room for in the final script, including a bunch of intriguing Elvira appearances from across the years. There's her 3D broadcast, her slightly uncomfortable interview with RuPaul, an accidental insult, a wig reveal, and a pork chop in a dress. Plus! The story behind Elvira's censored Saturday Night Live appearance, and a little sneak peek at where my research is taking me next. If you've got any Power Rangers stuff that I should see, send it my way!

What always surprised me, is that Elvira never did a guest spot on Mystery Science Theater 3000 or any of their subsequent movie riffing projects. She would have been an amazing addition to the shows.

Right??? What a blast that would be. Also I want to see her do something with the Muppets!!!

That would have been simply AMAZING!!! Oh, man, now I'm so sad thinking about the possibility... It would have absolutely melted my brain if she was on MST3K! In a good way, of course. 😉

Embedded video doesn't work for me, of course. 😞 On the Patreon app. EDIT: Vimeo link works, though. 😀

Another great video! Thank you so much for the Elvira content! She’s actually a distant cousin of mine, and I’ve always thought her look was really cool, but wasn’t allowed to watch her show when I was young, so I didn’t know much about her. Now that you’ve given me an intro to her life, I feel an even greater need to find a way to binge all of her material!

You are SO cute.

I, honestly, believe that Elvira was one of those characters that helped me realize my sexuality at a young age. As someone who was into horror and the macabre when I was a preteen, watching her specials and shows were a highlight to any day. I found her extremely attractive and interesting. A kindred spirit in many ways. So much so that I was always on the lookout for any broadcast that included her. As I got older and became more knowledgeable about her history the more I looked up to her. She had a great influence on me, with not only my realization of my sexuality but my education on the Queer community and Drag. Elvira (and by extension Cassandra) will always have a special place in my heart for those reasons.

I don't remember the Elvira/Coors ads for some reason, but I do recall that there was a period about then that the gay bars - at least in SF - stopped selling Coors, because Adolph Coors was vehemently homophobic. I believe the issue was actual discrimination in employment at Coors Beer. If one ordered a Coors in one of those bars, you'd be asked to order another brand. The fact you mention, that Elvira left Coors because someone in the family thought she was demonic, sounds about right. the Coors family is one of those vile families, like the Hobby Lobby family, who use their wealth to do all they can to suppress diversity in the country.

When I was a wee lad, there was a cutout of her at my dad’s barber’s. Remember all the adds. Loved her movie since I first saw it in like, 1989 at the age of 3. Also, Tress McNeille voiced Great Aunt Morgana too

Yes I believe that's in the Milk movie -- I seem to recall Harvey having a role in organizing a boycott of Coors in the Castro, I think in solidarity with truckers.

I didn't remember the trucker thing and I got interested and Googled it. I found an article saying it was still in force and that one would not find it any gay bar today. I don't know if that is true. But among other things the strike was protesting is that to get a job at Coors, one had to take a lie detector test which asked if one was homosexual. Here's a link if anyone is interested. https://www.liberationnews.org/the-coors-boycott-the-lgbt-movement-and-the-peoples-counter-offensive-against-the-right/

My eldest daughter was named Cassandra after Cassandra Peterson. Her middle name is Pride as 27 years ago she was almost born at Boston Pride. I will do whatever I can to find Elvira on SNL. I also have multiple life sized cut outs of her in storage.

Great stuff, Matt. FYI, The streaming service is called Peacock because the peacock is the symbol of NBC.
