Steve reads most of a chapter of a classic novel that he used to teach.

STEVE READS is a new Patreon-exclusive series from DeepNerd Media. People have said for over a year now that they’d listen to Steve Shell, narrator of Old Gods of Appalachia, read the phonebook, cereal boxes, or whatever other mundane text he could lay hands on.  Welp. Here you go, Family.

Steve, I haven't thought a kind thought about Steinbeck since my terrible 7th grade teacher made The Red Pony into sheer misery for us, and I resent that you just made me like it. <3

I am a new member of the family here but have been listening to and loving Old Gods of Appalachia for the last 6 months. Definitely count me as one who would love to hear Steve read anything, including the phone book! Steve Reads is a wonderful gift and this first episode was amazing. Thank you!

I had a teacher who spent the entire semester on Steinbeck and haven't read him since. I was so depressed by the end of that class.

Just thinking about this book again made me cry... awesome reading Steve!

I have never enjoyed Steinbeck and hated reading his books when I was in school - but hearing Steve read this makes it more interesting!

This was wonderful, and thanks for the scholarly commentary at the end.

I guessed the book at the mention of Salinas. Great reading!

Once an English professor in college read Silas Marner by Tennyson. At the end you could hear a pin drop. That is the power of great literature read in proper fashion.
