It's odd, but as someone that has read a good part of this manga, this episode was quite a let-down. Just like in ep 4 with Nagatoro sleeping portrait, they changed the end of the first half and made it way less wholesome. You should consider read the manga from the beginning to see some great moments they are putting aside after the anime ends. In fact, the beach part is adapted properly as is in the manga and you can see how wholesome the end was.
