I kinda wonder if the episode would have been beter if they didn't put up the warning at the beginning. The shock factor would have been bigger.

One of the reasons I love manga/anime is the willingness to change tones so quickly. I grew up on old Hollywood films and I miss that confidence to go from comedy to tragedy and back again. One added thing. Selena created an alibi for her parent's murder and, when captured, claimed she killed her uncle because he molested her. She was sentenced to death and we know serial killers like to talk, why did she never tell Estelle she had the same motive for her parent's murder? Was it because she never saw her as a friend? It is possible her abusive past was just a story she practiced in case she got caught and, from the beginning, Selena had no motive except for her own enjoyment.
