I want to say I'm surprised each week that Elaina isn't technically bothered by these events but maybe she's been desensitized since she was a child. Those witch stories her mom read her were never cheery and happy endings, and if they were actual observations by that original travelling witch then maybe it's just a known fact that rarely good things happen in this world. Like everyone knows wars or strife or crime or whole kingdoms fall pray to curses and monsters. If you grew up in a world like that likely anyone would turn out the same, it was just us the viewer assuming it was a light and fluffy story.
