Please forgive the obnoxious Manga Reader Venting… It’s hard to fully get into it without spoilers (which shouldn’t technically be spoilers anymore? I’ll throw in a quick explanation below in case anyone’s curious) but this was a wild disappointment!? For better or worse, they’ve adapted the manga nearly 1:1 but for some reason decided to absolutely butcher this episode in such a way that I’m genuinely confused as to what they’re going to do. Literally every reaction I’ve seen from people familiar with the manga has been pure confusion and disappointment. It’s like… it’s not the end of the world and I’m being a teensy bit melodramatic for fun but it also kind of sucks when you’re trying to go to bat for something and you end up feeling like a bit of a doof for doing so. [Spoilers for the manga version of this episode? ...Alternate universe spoilers???] There’s a lot more going on with the trip in general that could have comfortably taken up more of the episode’s runtime, but the big issue is: In the manga, Eiji zonks out in his hotel bed (not some weird bathhouse common area?) and instead of going back to her own room, Rin climbs into bed with him, hoping she can explain herself in the morning. So it makes a lot more sense for Eiji to be like “uhhhh what happened” when he sees he shared a bed with her through the night. She does panic like she does in the episode (also “I just wanted to be/stay with you” makes a lot more sense in this context) and says she wants to confess properly, and Eiji’s response is “okay, we’ll do it your way so I’ll hold off on being excited for now” and then Rin screams out loud, NOT VIA INTERNAL MONOLOGUE, “I love that part of you too!” and Eiji replies “YOU SAID IT ANYWAY!?” and THEN we cut to both of them being super shy and him asking to hold her hand. So like, this was actually THE episode that they were meant to explicitly start dating which obviously has pretty big ramifications for the entire rest of the story. It’s crazy disappointing, mostly because it’s a total mystery as to why they would change this of all things. It’s probably the scene people were most looking forward to! Everyone’s SO confused, man. Maybe they thought that what we got managed to somehow convey all the same things, but I definitely don’t think so and it doesn’t sound like the non-manga readers feel that way either. :c
