It doesn't really excuse it. But the anime made changed a lot how it was depicted in the LN. Rudy was slowly regressing to how he was in his past life. I don't remember how long exactly but he didn't go out of his room for many days and wouldn't speak or answer to anybody. This was what pushed Roxy to do that. But yeah, still feels bad for Sylphie...

No reason to hate your reaction, it's a completely legitimate reaction. There are all kinds of things and excuses I could line up. Like that Roxy only got the idea to have sex with him to help him because, when they discussed how to deal with Rudy being in the state he is in, falling deeper and deeper into depression, refusing to leave the room or even eat properly, Roxy heard Geese say that: “Men are straightforward. Give them some alcohol, a woman to bed, and they’ll get that rush of joy from being alive. Bring a little bit of energy back to them. I mean, yeah, it’s not going to return them to how they were, but still.” And heard Elinalise mention that she indeed has experience getting men back on their feet that way, though that she refuses to use that method with Rudy, because of Sylphie (that's when Roxy heard about the marriage and child). In the end even if well intended, intended to help him/save him, Roxy made the decision to make advances on a very vulnerable Rudy herself, knowing he was married with a child on the way. And Rudy for his part might have been extremely vulnerable and trapped in grief and depression but he still made the decision to go with it instead of trying to stop Roxy at any point. That polygamy is a relatively normal thing in this world for those well off that aren't Millis worshippers doesn't matter much because Rudy promised to stay faithful to Sylphie. No matter the excuses in the end it was all around shitty from both of them. Understandable and human considering their feelings and the situation they were in, but still really shitty towards Sylphie. Everything beyond that is just trying to make the best out of the shitty situation that they themselves created now, to find some way to make it work. As for the timing thing, if you think about it, if Hitogami didn't tell Rudy to not go to Begaritt and go to the university instead he would have met Roxy first.
