Maine was a true bro for Carolina. The feeling I've always had from from the depiction of Carolina and Maine's relationship is that his connection with Carolina as a comrade was one of the strongest ones in Project Freelancer. While Maine was clearly VERY competitive with the other agents, it didn't feel that way whenever it was with Carolina. Instead, it felt like they were actually working together rather than how any other agent was simply working while Carolina was also working. For the others, it felt like they were fighting on their own against the same enemy. With Maine also being like that with the other agents, but not with Carolina. With her, it really felt to me as though they were fighting together. And Maine didn't hesitate at all to shield Carolina with his own body. And Carolina, someone who was insanely competitive and who was at a point where she would've likely taken any power boost to ensure her superiority to Texas, gave Sigma to Maine so that he would be able to speak and function correctly after his injuries taken for her sake. We also need to remember the context of Carolina and the Director right before that. She had just told the Director, her father, that she was ready to do anything for him, and said so in the implied context that he was then going to have her get an AI, that is to say Sigma. And yet, she still refused and requested that Sigma be given to Maine instead. Carolina and Maine's relationship as comrades is very interesting to me. We didn't get to see much of it, but the implications about it are enough to give it a lot of depth. And it makes it even more tragic that their relationship, one of the very few in Project Freelancer where they had actual teamwork and complete trust (like the Reds and Blues), ended up going downhill so tragically as a result of Sigma being given to Maine.
