It's been an interesting work week actually. A lot of theft in our store. A co-worker of my own spoke with me as we cleaned the infield for the evening. She spoke of how in her country if they would catch a thief, they would kick them like a soccer ball until they were unconscious or worse. She had a bit of laughter to the thought. I chuckled myself and shook my head.
So I told her " That's just the problem though. I mean hurting people because of items and money. I know about those kinds of things and it makes me wonder how many of the people from the place you grew up were even suspected and just kicked or worse. Did you ever kick someone just because you wanted to, because you were angry or just wanted to feel validated for harming someone? " I'm not sure she understood me all that well because she just shrugged and told me " People are disgusting. "
So I sighed and asked " Do you think I'm disgusting? Oh forget that. Do you think you're disgusting? " she had to think about it. She didn't answer fast enough to be certain and with some hesitancy she said that she didn't. The truth though is that somewhere deep down inside she probably does. It's a thing a lot of people don't recognize, or seldom consider. They see the world as they see themselves. It all starts with you. If you see the worst in others, it's not just by experience but by expectations in all manners of things, applied to the self at a young age. People get so mad, so restricted, so isolated and pent up. It's like they're waiting for an excuse to unleash every ounce of doubt and terror in their hearts to tell every person and themselves " I am the hero. The only hero. " It's...sad. People aren't disgusting, and they're not irredeemable. We believe we are disgusting. They're not beneath what we consider valuable, they are valuable.
I worry for her as I do a lot of people. All these miserable, consumed individuals who tell themselves why they can't have good things but why they deserve them, and how whatever painful or harmful actions they partake in is in some way innocent, justified, valid and necessary. It's quick, it's easy...
...Problem is, you don't truly learn what is inside you by making yourself easy. You don't realize if you'll float in the deep entrenching part of the pool if you stay in the shallows. It's like a lake, and that surface doesn't deserve to be so still and sterile.
