"Umagi is a growing girl, and she has a big appetite just like any other regular high school girl!"

So, this video is late because I had to change a lot of things. With the previous video, YouTube's content ID thought that I was just reposting the first episode of Sailor Moon. Like, it was looking at these two frames:

And going: "Yup, nothing unusual here, they are exactly the same!" lol. Then I realized that YouTube is not just looking at the characters, it's matching the timing of the footage, the background elements, etc.

So I took extra care this time to make sure that the footage is different from the original episode. I even replaced some of the backgrounds.

Traditional frame by frame animation is another thing that takes a lot of time to do. I love watching traditional animation, but I hate doing it. Drawing and painting all those frames makes you feel like a machine after a while.

So I decided to try something different with one of the scenes, instead of drawing it frame by frame in Photoshop, I just animated the entire thing with vectors in After Effects.

The advantage here is that a lot of the process gets automated, I don't have to worry about applying effects every frame and I don't have to keep going back and forth between the two programs every time I want to change something. The disadvantage is that vectors can get messy if you add a lot of detail, and AE becomes very slow, so this is better suited for simple characters that don't change too much between frames. The lines also don't look quite the same as they do in photoshop, but that's something that can be tweaked. If you guys want to see how it works, the assets are up in the rewards page:

woah! But what about total time spent? How much faster AE is?

It matches in very well with the original art. Got a good chuckle out of me.

Well, I did spend quite a bit of time working out the effects and the compositions, so it wasn't that much faster this first time around. Now that I figured it out, it can potentially save me days of work! But like I said, it depends on the scene, I reckon that most of the time AE vectors are not going to be the best option.

Clever. ;)
