Met Gala fanart + Sailor Cosmos thumbnails (Patreon)

I'm still not a fan of the theme, but I am a sucker for black and white fashion 😩

Here are some of my favorite looks from this year's Met Gala! I really wanted to draw more, Jenna Ortega and Brian Tyree Henry especially, but I was already spending precious commission time on this...

I feel like everyone was more on theme this year than previous years, and more importantly the highs were a lot better than last year's highs. I know "black and white" is a much easier prompt to follow but even so I think a lot of the fashion was a strong ode to Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld's vision. I have to acknowledge Karl Lagerfeld was not a very cool person and said some controversial stuff, and I would have been very happy if they picked a different Met Gala theme. But I do want to celebrate the people and the fashion designers invited to make their presence at the gala.

I did draw this as a "I love this fashion so much I need to draw this" than a "I'm drawing this to hop on the trend". So I'm glad I got it out of my system, and also that I didn't end up straining my hands to draw more than three! Although, I won't lie that I was secretly looking forward to drawing more designer fashion, instead of having to come up with my own 😆

Anyways, this was a small detour from the big Sailor Moon fanart commission I actually need to work on, so it's time to get back to it! My client and I bonded over our love of Sailor Cosmos, who is Sailor Moon's final form. 

Sailor Cosmos is one of my favorite characters for her pastel rainbow palette and celestial motifs, so I wanted to play off both of these things. Eventually we settled on this composition, a pastel rainbow doily in the background that will have each of the Sailor Senshi in one of the circles.

I love group illustrations of the senshi more than individual ones and this felt like the best way to include all the characters while sticking to Cosmos' aesthetic. The official manga illustrations also used doilies commonly, so it is sort of a callback to that:

Also, the client had a HUGE budget and I felt the only way to justify that was to make it a group illustration in some way LOL
