Redesigning Disenchanted (Patreon)
Content
I drew Maya Rudolph in Disenchanted! The movie was better than I expected (better than Hocus Pocus 2) but the costumes were mostly disappointing compared to Enchanted. The budget was probably a lot less though, so I get it.
Still, I felt like there were some good ideas in this dress, so on a whim I decided to redesign it this week. I also thought it was a good opportunity to try a similar composition to my Pantone illustration!
The scalloping and the beaded fringe were giving me hints of art deco, so I thought it might be fun turning up the "art deco" to 100. Also, I didn't realize this until rewatching yesterday but Enchanted was very inspired by art nouveau so it sort of makes sense to make Disenchanted more art deco-y as a spiritual successor, I think?
Also, biggest gripe with this design is that the red jewels look so costumey despite being a beautiful pop of color, so I wanted to add more red jewels to the gown to make it cohesive.

This was technically a speedpaint; I drew a lot of things on the same layers when I'd normally separate them. I just really wanted to get this idea out of my head, and also glitter makes everything look more finished 🤣
Also haven't really drawn a real person in forever, and struggled a bit because Maya Rudolph has such a unique face...I'm still trying to balance this art style with capturing likenesses. But I'm glad I got to practice again!
(Wanted to redesign a certain peacock dress as well but I think it would be too spoiler-y. Maybe if ppl like this post enough I'll tackle that dress)
