Altered beast, like a lot of early genesis games, was an arcade game first.  Thus eating quarters was part of its mission statement.  Also it controls like ASS and history probably would have forgotten it if not for "Rise from your grave" and "WElcome TO your DOOM" 

Metamorphic force is a waaaaaaaaaaay better game.
