Hi all!

Just a quick update to say that things are moving on the IR flare video! Looks like the pyro mixes are working, and the IR imager I’ve cobbled together will kinda work too.

I hope to finish it this month, and will do the call out for chalkboard requests soon as I’ll be filming the talking bits before throwing everything through the editing meat grinder.

Here’s a short clip of some Mg/Teflon mix burning in real time + high speed. I’m enjoying using the high speed camera still!

Hope you liked the magnet video, and will be more cubane videos coming soon, although currently the priority is the flare video (because it’s getting too hot to safely/ethically light fires in the yard!!)

Really interested to see what you've cobbled together for an IR imager? Thought for sure the best you could have done for LWIR was a really crude non-imaging seeker but even that should have taken a lot of effort. Please tell me it's some sort of backyard shed invention of a pinhole lens focusing an image on a piece of IR photochromic paper, that would be funny and on point for chemistry/physics background.

Ok so it’s a thing called a thermopile array, which are just really broadband heat sensors in a 16x16 array. Extremely low-res, but I’ve slapped a sapphire filter in front of it (a cheap replacement watch cover!) to block anything longer than 5um. It can see visible so it’s now a 1 to 5um 16x16 imager for like $200

Why does Teflon work so well for this?

It seems a weird choice doesn’t it! But as it burns to make MgF2, it leaves behind carbon particles that glow in the IR. Will be a lot of cool science to discuss in the video for sure!
