Hey! Here's a new painting for you guys. I felt like painting another forest scene, I hope you like it!

This one ended up being kind of a 2-in-1 scene, and took a bit longer than I had hoped. The extra couple of days I spent did help a lot in making me happier with the end result, so I'm kinda glad I didn't undercook it just to hit arbitrary deadlines I set for myself. Hopefully you guys appreciate that as well. 😅

Here are the download links for the rewards for this illustration:
WIP images
Short time lapse video
Long time lapse video
PSD files

I've included the Paintstorm brushes I used for this illustration in the attachments here as well, hopefully some of you will find those useful.

The portrait doodle I added this time is meant to eventually be a part of a tiny tutorial I've been wanting to make for a long time, where I'll try to explain the Hard Light blending mode and how I use it to fix or improve my colors and values. Hopefully that'll be useful to some of you when I eventually get around to finishing it!

But I'll probably first focus on doing some new sketches over the next few days now. I'm looking forward to that. :)

These are so great. And I love the elf girl portrait! Can't wait for the tutorial

First of all, I really like the sketches that you've provided. The top image looks very interesting, with a vibrant scene and a voluptuous green lady in quite an interesting pose 😉 If you decided to turn that into a full painting, I'd definitely love to see that! She looks so dynamic and sensual, the scene looks great and of course, what her and her friend are doing is pretty darned hot 😹 The sketch below looks great too, with the warmly lit character laying among the green scene, with her body opened up for a full view. And it's always nice to see a lovely lady outside and enjoying nature 😉😹 And looking at the main painting, we have the crossover of the century here! Luke and the nerdy elf together in the same painting, confirming the existence of the Calm Cinematic Universe! Does the elf guy have a name? Just so I have something to call him other than the "nerdy elf" 😹 Looking at the whole scene, we have an utterly gorgeous and stunningly vibrant environment here. This jungle setting looks fantastic with so much detailed, intricate and dense foliage. The textures of all of the leaves, twisting trees, rocks and all of the plants are as terrific as always. The two birds in the top left are a fun addition too, the orange and blue colours make them pop and something about their design and shapes just make them look so endearing. Especially the left one and how it's looking down at the scene below, would love to know what it makes of all this 😹 The overall tones of the painting are lovely too, despite green being the dominant colour, the scene looks so warm, being bathed in sunlight. I also like the opening in the trees, letting us see the blue sky and soft, fluffy clouds. I also like how the trees surrounding the blue are being tinted a cooler, blue tone. Luke stands out really well here too, with his warm colours set against the blue sky and framed by the cooler green leaves on both sides. The poses of all of the characters give them all a lot of life and dynamism too 😸 I like how Luke has this twist to him, his torso and hips turned in opposite directions, with asymmetry and foreshortening to his arms as well. The white-haired lady looks so sensual too, with this long C-curve running through her raised arms and across her arched back, with her long hair having beautiful, flowing curves as it spreads and curls around her. I like how intimately the nerdy elf and his lady-friend are posed, laying together amongst the leaves. She looks especially fun, with her big smile, with her pose looking sensual as her breasts rest across her chest and her finger delicately trailing between her thighs. Speaking of which, I like the pose of that hand a lot, hell, all of the hands look great! I feel I should point that out specifically, given how notoriously tricky hands are to do well and we have 7 visible hands, all in complex poses and with most interacting with either the environment or the characters Oh and I got so caught up in the hands that I almost forgot that I love the pink-eyed elf's hair. It looks so lovely spreading across her and the nerdy elf's body, in intricate curls and swirls. And all that clinical talk aside, it must be said... these ladies do look really freaking hot 😻 I love the way the white-haired girl's breasts hang and squish against the rocks below, with this natural sense of heft and weight to them. Likewise, the other girl's breasts look so lovely and smooth and I love the tease as she runs her finger across her naughty bits below. The rendering on all of the characters is absolutely amazing too. Funnily enough, Luke might actually be my favourite here. I'm a huge fan of contrast between light and shadow and he has that going a lot! The way the warm light hits him from the side, casting dark shadows across his front, just looks so good and gives such depth and volume to him. Combined with the thick edge-lighting across various parts of his body and he is just brilliantly painted and given so much definition. I also like the blue tint to his hair and you've done a marvellous job on his expression and facial features. The white-haired girl is so well painted too, I really like the definition of her left butt and leg in particular, with the thick shadow running down one side. The shoulder is really nice too, with how it connects to her arm and body, with interesting plane changes and interlocking shapes beneath it as well. The breasts are both beautiful and I like a lot of the little lighting and colour interactions happening here. I like how her left breast is bathed in light, with the other kept mostly in shadow for a striking contrast in tone. They both look extra vibrant too, with green tinting on the left one and blue on the right 💚💙 Her eyes are so striking too and I enjoy the red tint to her cheeks, with her warm-toned face framed very nicely by all of that white hair. Nerdy elf is great too, just really well defined, textured and lit. I like the edge-lighting across his left leg, especially his calf. The red-tinting on his hand, combined with these juicy edge-lights on his fingers are interesting too, giving the impression of sweat/moistness to the skin. Of course, all of the characers do seem to be sweating, so this makes sense Pink-eyed elf girl just has such a fun, exuberant expression. Her glowing pink eyes are very striking, as are her wide, toothy smile and shiny red cheeks. She definitely looks like a tonne of fun! 🥰🥰🥰 Her hair is beautiful, the brighter, shiny texture to the hair looks really nice, contrasting well with the darker parts and giving her hair so much definition. She also has lovely lighting on her legs, giving them great definition, I also like where her shoulder locks into her arm and mentioning it now for the third time... she just has such lovely, smooth breasts 🥰 I should have mentioned this at the start but I also really like the textures of the foreground leaves. They also give this impression like we're voyeurs of this scene, travelling through this jungle and we look through a gap in the foliage and are greeted with this wondrous sight. Okay... I'm done! 😹 Excellent work on yet another beautiful, vibrant and sexy painting, with a fun, lively atmosphere and absolutely packed to bursting with detail and texture! (The birds are great, more little animal witnesses to future scenes would be fun 😸) 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Ufff, the way the guys gush so much sauce 😮‍💨 Also, the chicks are like... melon priestesses 🍈👀 haha, this is so sexy (and pretty)

Awesome stuff! I'm interested to see if the forest sketch gets finished 😍 the portrait is great, your art style works so well with fantasy themes and your use of color is wonderful!

Love Nerdy Elf's expression: Totally exhausted, or becoming jaded at the amount of sex he's become accustomed to? As always, love the smiles on everyone's faces--always a good time in Calm's World!

I'm glad you like them! The tutorial might take a little while to finish between other projects, but hopefully not far too long lol.

calm

Thank you, I'm glad you like the sketches and the painting, Ciarán! I'm afraid the elf guy doesn't have a name, I'm sorry. I'm terrible at coming up with names as always. But I will one of these days I'm sure.😅

Ciarán M

Oh, I know that pain! Many a time have I sat and stared at the name part of in-game character creators... when none of the NPCs are even going to be able to say my characters name anyway 😹 I've given up and all of my characters are just called "John" now 😹

calm

Lol, he might appreciate at least a small break. I'm glad you like the painting!

This is awesome. You’re great with the blending modes. Can’t wait!

Looking forward to the tutorial Yayy I've been struggling with using hardlight to create the base color with some skin color zone over the greyscale value. Using some softlight to pop the color after sometimes I feel like I have no control over it. I hope your simple tutorial will help. I admit I am also weak at studying a certain method in complex illustration. Usually, it has a lot of aspects, composition, contrast value, dark on light on dark, etc. So a portrait or bust-up figure is just perfect to start learning 🤗

Seth

Might add this to my top five favorites of yours. Amazing

calm

Yeah, hopefully the tutorial will help a bit! If you catch yourself just guessing what the result will be when you use a color on the Hard Light or Soft Light layers, then it's a good idea to start picking colors very close to 50% grey and gradually work your way out from there until you find the right color. Maybe that can help you feel a bit more in control. :) When working on those Hard Light or Soft Light layers I also feel like it's important to set the color picker to pick colors only from the current layer in order to maintain control over how colors blend on those layers. Incidentally that's the main reason I feel like I can't work in Procreate, because I've never found that setting for the color picker there, lol. Hopefully your software has it though!

calm

Haha yeah. Bless the games that give us a default name option and a name generator 😅

Woo, awesome illustration! Can't wait for the tutorial!
