(ಡ‸ಡ) Guys - have you ever inquired about something in extreme anticipation, awaiting the answer to your question with so much happiness, only to have it crushed by the response?

Si, klaro. That's what happened to me just now. Look at this:

This is the fanart of a person I have contacted (@morio_san on Twitter) to see if they.. would create a VTuber sheet for me. Simply because this is my favourite Tifa Fanart of all time and I honestly never even thought the guy would answer. But he did!

He said he would, indeed, draw me Tifa as a VTuber model. Meaning, this art style for Tifa, as a Vtuber - which I could then use to do my Streams with (of which I would want to do many more, would I have this, of course).

I expected it to be pricy, of course- Vtuber models always are. But since this wouldn't be rigged yet (which is another set of costs that would come my way), I thought it wouldn't be just as much but hoooo boy, was I wrong.

I get it though. He's a master of his craft; it looks absolutely fantastic and for someone to agree to draw a Vtuber sheet file with a technically copyrighted character is already a miracle. That said? 500,000 Yen. Which translates into roughly 3.500€ or $3,855. (╥﹏╥)

Who has that kind of money just laying around?!

So I am not sure what to do, to be honest. This may be a one-in-a-lifetime chance.. but I also don't really have those funds right now. My question is: What do you think about this? If you were me, what would you do? (ಥ﹏ಥ)

Feedback /thoughts are greatly appreciated. Your opinions mean the world to me.

Ok, that's a reasonable thing to contemplate about. The sheer amount probably is difficult to compare to any buys you did in your past, right? If not, what was the other thing that cost that much or that came near the amount? What did or does that other thing give you in return? And what would the V-Tuber sheet of that artist do for you? An Example: I spend like 4-8k€/year on artists of all sorts depending on the bonus payments I get. As a sum this is huge even for me. But since CoVID it was something I contemplated about and then just went for the decision on it. I surely don't regret this and as I see the good things the money allows artists to do for others, I feel like multiplying my money as an effect. So would buying this piece of art and technology have an impact on you or allowing you to impact other in a way that investing this money in something else could? I think this is the question that counts. I think plans to really pay the money can always be sorted out.

Sreliata

That IS a very good way to think about it and honestly the one and biggest 'drive' I have on the matter. Investing in something like this wouldn't be because I like seeing a "PSD File" and stare at it.. - no. It would be something I'd use to do even more with my community. Aka: Streams, engagement. Much like the podcast I did- but with 'video' to it, if that makes sense? And maybe that could bring a smile to peoples face, in which case it would be amazing and multiplied ten-fold. If I'd have the funds right NOW, I'd do it in a heartbeat to be honest. What better thing is there, than to make those we value (or anyone, really) smile? To distract them a little while from the bleakness everyday live can have sometimes? The only thing that holds me on the fence is the missing funds, and whether or not it may be worth a loan. But will I be able to pay that off, or sit somewhere in "minus" for a long time myself? Questions.

Obviously it's something big that could change the aspect of many things in your life which could be interesting but yet challenging, which is quite good, but comes with a big sacrifice, I always believe that if you want something, you should aim to get it no matter what stands in your way, but since it's something quite drastic, I would recommend to ask yourself, do you really want it? Of course, this is up to you and I'm sure we'll all support you with every decision you'll make!

Sreliata

I think the only other purchase of that value would be a PC and that lasts for many years and helps me create the art pieces of course. An expense like this may bring a smile to many peoples faces though, so it would also be worth it - and if I'd have the money right NOW, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But because I don't, the decision is much harder of course. Hach.. lots to think about! ^.^

That's true, it will definitely bring smiles and hype to many people, but with the current situation which makes it really hard to decide, will it make yourself happy knowing the big risk with this deal? There's a lot to think about here, but don't forget to think about yourself and your future plans 😄

I'm no expert on the fair market value of Vtuber avatars but I would look at what their current demand is to see if their current popularity justifies the cost. I would also be concerned you cant make your money back because of potential copyright issues... If you cant monetize streams becuase its "Tifa" you might have issues.

Sreliata

That's precisely the questions I have in my head! ^.^ Of course I'll let you know how it goes.

Sreliata

Yeah, that is the downside. Technically, there's even huge dolls and stuff sold of Tifa all the time that aren't official - and it seems to be no issue. But if it were, at any point, I would just have to make my videos using this, private- for Patreon only. Hihi.

Ich kann das Gefühl verstehen so etwas haben zu wollen. Bin auch etwas überrascht gewesen wie teuer die sein können. Aber die machen dann schon richtig was her.

Ok, so if it's only about how to handle the finances, there are a lot of levers to use. One already pointed out installments, others pointed out loans, I think currently is still a good timing for loans. Just check the field and see if it's possible.

Sreliata

Do you know what the policy of Square Enix is in regards to using there Characters in as a VTuber Model? If you don’t know it you should first consult there legal department. It would be a waste to buy the model and not be able to use it. If the legal aspect is safe and you want to use it a lot (and I think you want to use it a lot) than you should get it.

Mikel

If this is your all time favorite fan artist offering to make you a vtuber avatar, holy moly, once in a lifetime! If you don’t have the money now, come up with a game plan to get it, set out a timeline, and keep the artist updated. Don’t let them slip away now that they replied.

Sreliata

That is absolutely true. Though sadly, it's not so easy to reach them on that regard. Based on the fact however that many sell super high end figurines of Tifa (for about 2000 EUR and more) and have no issues, I wonder if streaming is a problem. Mhhh.

Sreliata

That is PRECISELY the thing!! I didn't even expect the artist to answer - but he did. And it may truly be a once in a lifetime thing ;_; so that stresses me incredibly much. I don't have the funds, so I have to see what he says (if I can do installments or all at once) and then think further.

I personally never heard of a VTuber that is “copying” the image of a character of an IP. The only thing I ever heard of was that the image of Hololive talent Usada Pekorawas was used in the second season of “how not to summon a daemon lord” just as a background character and that ended in some legal action. Japanese company’s can be easily triggered to take legal action and this would be a precedent case so you should take all precautions before stepping into a mine field.

Personally to me that seems like a crazy price for some sort of art. But if it's something you want then look at your finances, maybe see if they would do some sort of a payment plan and try to find a way that it is affordable and won't financially screw you over.

Anonymous

I am not saying that you should not do it, but that you should be sure that you are legally on the safe side.

Luna

I think it’s something that’s clearly very important to you, and you should try to do whatever it takes to make your dream come true :3 Maybe you could talk with the artist about payment options? For example in the past I’ve commissioned some art for about $800, and the artist was okay with taking it in multiple payments! So, over a couple months I made payments of about $200, and finally once it was fully paid the artist began my commission. Since it’s a lot of money for your Vtuber model, maybe the artist would do a similar deal with you? This way it’s easier to pay instead of a big amount all at once! And for what it’s worth I’ll definitely keep commissioning you after that last one was so beautiful, so you can count on that to help a little bit 🖤

Sreliata

Yeah, technically I agree. I think they price it so high becaues they themselves have to work on that for weeks before they can finish.

Sreliata

Yes. You are absolutely right! I have contacted the artist to see if perhaps I could get some payment plan (in installments). Hopefully he agrees. If not, maybe I can offer commissions for a 'funding' of it, so to speak! ^.^

Robert Molt

1) I did not know you did live streams in the first place! Can you tell me when/where you do this, as well as what you stream?

Robert Molt

2) Obviously it would be hot as hell to see you sometimes as yourself, sometimes as a Vtuber (both, not just one....you're you, and that it's own beauty, too). I don't know anything about the legalities of this. I hope a payment plan is an option for you? Do you have documentation on your commission policy? Do you know how far away you would be from purchasing this? i.e., would a fund raiser realistically work?

Sreliata

Hey hey Robert! ^_^ You can find me on http://twitch.com/Sreliata - It has been a few weeks since I did one, but if things were to change I'd like to do about 2 per week. <3

Sreliata

.. I am.. - well, let's just say I Have 700 EUR, but the thing costs 3.500! So as you can see, I am quite a bit off. A friend of mine once said it's easier to be in debt than to live with regret. So I am trying to think of that but of course, doing something with money you don't have is never really easy. Right? ^.^

Robert Molt

Hi hi! I know it has been a long time; I have been badly busy for about 3 weeks straight. Have you been on twitch at all?

Robert Molt

Did you end up making a decision about the purchase?

I did. I tried it then but I didn't hear back from the artist so I don't think it will happen anymore.
