Bah, it's Japanese stupidity. I see their hypocrisy only too well, you just have to see the story objectively to understand that, then you have to read between the lines of the manga to see it.

Even though I imagined Saki's backstory wasn't terribly happy, I wasn't expecting kidnapping until the past few pages. This certainly does illuminate her behavior for much of the story, her intense searching for her father and clingy attachment to Chihaya being of note.
