Chihaya and Aya engaged in a training they had thought up of to further boost their underwater perseverance... testing how many minutes they can stay under after they exhaled out all air.

Aya: "...... ...?"

Chi: "..... ..."

(A bit hard to communicate without any bubbling!:-))

Well, for Aya, it's 3 minutes, at least it was back when she was 11 in Diving girls. Likely has improved since then. But then, I don't think she actually got any water in her lungs either; she just fully exhaled into Chihaya until there wasn't anything left she could get out, then held whatever "residual" happened to be left over. (Which would still be air, just not much, you can't exhale "all" the air in your lungs.) I would guess that's what they're doing here, seeing how long they can last on "residual" respiratory volume. Or I suppose it could be "flooded lung" duration this time, after all they are talking the highly unusual (for them) step of actually taking a safety precaution. and doing it in very shallow water.

Also confirms that they apparently have a "bubblelese" dialect they've developed for use underwater.
