Synth1: tips & trixxx (disguised as a beginner's guide)

here are some basix, some tipz, some trix, and so on - a bunch of stuff i regularly do in synth1 (and general exploration because i always end up doing that when i open the thing). synth1 isn't about to rock your world with advanced sound design, but it just might rock it with its general vibe. generally, i'm just hoping to provide some jumping off points if you're new to it or haven't explored some of its quirks. as always, this is unscripted and a bit of a mess. theres probably some fucked up editing errors somewhere, cannae be assed to watch it a millionth time. i really didn't mean for this to be over an hour long. i'm fully aware the audio levels aren't as great as they could be, i'm tryin' to find a workflow for these in which i do as little editing as possible (all compositing/effects/transitions/etc are done in OBS, i just trim it in vegas later) and that includes auto audio levelling. ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 𝙑𝙄𝘿𝙀𝙊 𝙍𝙀𝙎𝙊𝙐𝙍𝘾𝙀𝙎: synth1: https://daichilab.com/ mirror: https://plugins4free.com/plugin/245/ another mirror: https://heckscaper.com/usefulthings/VSTs/synth1.zip a small collection of patches i've made and used in tracks over the years: https://heckscaper.com/usefulthings/Patches/synth1/synth1_patches.zip (you can just drag these onto synth1, i don't use the preset banks feature sorry) my init patch (blank slate) if you don't have one / can't be assed: https://heckscaper.com/usefulthings/Patches/synth1/init.fxp signalizer (the visualization VST i'm using): http://www.jthorborg.com/signalizer.html WATCH THESE IF YOU DON'T KNOW SUBTRACTIVE (I KNOW I SAID "ADDITIVE AT ONE POINT OK IT HAPPENS) AND FM SYNTH BUSINESS: "Basics of Subtractive Synthesis" by Red Means Recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyXVcasmq78 "FM SYNTHS in under 4 minutes" by Andrew Huang (you should watch the prior video first for more context!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvBl3YUBUyY ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 𝙏𝙄𝙈𝙀𝘾𝙊𝘿𝙀𝙎: 𝐝𝐚 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨: 0:00 hi 1:14 THIS IS NOT A BASIC SYNTHESIS TUTORIAL!!!!!!!! 1:43 news: it sounds "bad" by """PRO VST""" standards and has weird-ass limitations 2:17 the layout and as close to the basics as we get (LONG AND BORING BUT WATCH IF U NEED TO PLZ) 𝐭𝟑𝐡 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐳𝟎𝐫𝐳 (𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 - 𝐢 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐲 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝): 22:17 the chorus: always affecting the delay, no matter what (i just covered this in the layout but ok) 26:10 fm as the non-kickdrum percussive secret sauce (donkin)* 30:09 ok. kicks (this is a bad kick - i recommend using an external distortion plugin if you want big phat oontz. makes great psy kicks tho) 33:25 ok. snares (well decent) 40:51 ok. hats (its hats) 43:46 the talk bass. the bass is talking wawawawawa (bonus: what da fuks a formant/vowel filter!) 47:04 BIG STINKIN BASS (the best worst sound for you to put in your music) 49:56 fast classix pt1: da reece 50:55 fast classix pt2: just the worst gabber synth 51:55 fast classix pt3: lysergic acid diethylamide analogues 53:41 foundational elements of weird techno drug sounds - the true depths of synth1 reveal themselvez 58:14 ambient soundz exploration: the real meat and/or potatez 𝐝𝐚 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐨: 1:09:03 synth1 good 1:12:20 *i forgot to record this weird shit that happens when you sync the fm modulator ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 𝙎𝙏𝙐𝙁𝙁: VSTs i use all the time (many of them are free, i've organized the list as free/paid): https://pastebin.com/76z3QY9n thousands of samples and resources from my work for you to use if you want: https://heckscaper.com/resources/ some stuff i've done that features synth1 prominently: most of the synths on https://halleylabs.com/album/exuviae most of the synths on https://halleylabs.com/album/astroantediluvian most of the synths on https://halleylabs.com/album/framedrag (incl. guitars, which are synth1 processed thru guitar rig - i'll do a synth1 guitar wank tutorial at some point) most of the synths on https://halleylabs.com/album/--13 most of the synths and many kicks on https://halleylabs.com/album/nerves-ending (w/ external distortion fx) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cgxt4hpD5KQ (all sounds) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utZvn_3I5iU (all sounds) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGlt_mUYyoE (all sounds) and so on... you can see where i'm going with this - synth1 is my bread and butter for synth music (ie. primarily melodic). in many cases it is the only synth on a track. the amount of expressive sound i get out of the thing is just unreal.
