My friends, the trench is finished (quite literally!) and I've got the basic ground texture down.

Making the destroyed trench section was heaps of fun compared to the intact portions, although it required a lot of planning. I'm super stoked to have that crazy shape cut into the veneer!

Also, the VMS smart mud feels almost like moist peat. It also behaves in the same way. What I find interesting is how it's not sticky at all, but after a few minutes, even random loose bits will start to connect, and when it dries, it has this ceramic-like quality. It also has beautiful texture, but of course, for some terrains, it's not enough. Especially here where's tons of loose dirt and large clumps of earth!

I also made the cross and a small portion of a wall. In retrospect, the wall was probably a mistake because... I don't know, I just don't like it there. But hey, right now I'm waiting for the earth to dry so I can cover the battlefield with lots of blown-up wood! Sections of the wicker walls, planks, etc. Just like in the inspirational photo. Once that is done, I just need to make the trench "lived in". Luckily, I found several great inspirational photos with sandbags, tarps, backpacks hanging on the walls, flimsies for water, oil lamps, ammo crates, shovels, ladders, all sorts of assorted junk!

And then, finally, this project will be ready for the painting booth!
