Why do a lot of Soviet tanks have that gap between the first bogie and the rest?

On the T-54/55 and their predecessor the T-44 it's because there's no torsion bars running underneath the fuel tank.

So it simplified the design a bit, maybe increased the range, too, since the tank doesn't loose volume to accommodate a torsion bar?
