Oils! (Patreon)

Hey friends! I wasn't sure if I wanted to use oil paints on this model, since the T-90 didn't really need them at all, but I decided to do it just for the sake of changing things a little. Of course, it was important to not cover up the distressing texture, so I avoided blending any oil dots over the entire surface and instead used only black brown and dark brown to render some details and add some initial dirt and grime passes.
I also used the dark brown to distinguish the concrete armor from the rest of the tank, again with a sort of a "collected dirt" effect. It's been mostly a sort of "dry wash" all around the tank. One thing that's hard to deny is how oils blend so much better than enamels when it comes to effects like this. Enamel wash blends in a sort of "all or nothing" way, meaning you either wipe the excess completely, or it'll remain messy, there's hardly any mottled or feathered transition. This advantage of oil paints can be appreciated in some areas where a regular wash would be too much - take a look at the machined texture around the commander's cupola.
Another thing I thought would be a good idea was to blend the black brown around stowage and tarps where they meet the hull. This should work as a subtle outline when I start painting them.
And last but not least, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and gave subtle streaking effects a try after a very long time - I'm not talking about those huge spills coming from fuel tank caps, these will be covered with more dust later, and of course some other tasty enamel effects, but what I meant are those tiny streaks coming from grab handles and stuff like that.
Anyway, chipping tomorrow? Chipping, rust and then video?
