Hey gang! I was going to hold off until May for an update post, but there's actually a lot to get you up to speed on.

At the start of the month, a huge ice storm tore through Quebec and Ontario. Hundreds of thousands of people lost power in Montreal alone. Easily thousands of trees fell or lost branches, some of which are still tentatively dangling over sidewalks in my neighbourhood, just barely attached. I'm not sure what to make of it, but it's been so striking an account of my month would be incomplete without it.

I have a couple videos in the works right now, and I'm not sure which order they'll come out in. One is an exploration of transness, science, and mysticism that's still pretty nebulous. The other... is a doozy.

The big one

I'm planning a sweeping retrospective on pop feminism.

The internet feminism of the 2010s was hugely influential to me as a

(2024 update: Patreon deleted a bunch of text from the middle of this update and some others, for some reason? Ugh! I didn't have it backed up anywhere - sorry!)

Other stuff

  • This month, I wrote a feature for a local magazine about cyberpunk & the commercialization of anti-capitalist aesthetics. Writing articles is fun and utterly kicks my ass – I find it so much harder than writing video scripts? Revisions are tough when I'm not the one deciding what to change! Anyway, I'm proud of it, and I'll share it here when it releases :)
  • I just finished editing a short film with my good friends at the indie studio Depanneur Films.

I would be so interested in talking to you about 2010s pop feminism that was also hugely impactful on me. however I do not know where to dm you! Does Patreon have that? lol

Augh—best of luck to Vic and the rest of the public service workers!

I'm not sure how, Patreon's user interface is weird, but yes you can DM creators. Go to Lily's main page, I think you can DM from there... poke around till ya find it, that's what I do lol

Best wishes to Vic in their strike. Not sure why previously agreed to working conditions should be controversial, but here we are. I was an adult by the 2010s (hell I was an adult by the mid 90s) but I did watch the popularization, and inevitable backlash, but also how absolutely ridiculous the backlashers were and how wonderfully they were dragged, with much interest - for femmes and humanity in general, but not least for my daughters. And yeah, the successes achieved by the patently ridiculous backlashers, despite majority opposition in most cases, is... deeply concerning. I definitely appreciated that the 2010s seemed to default to intersectionality in a way my parents' generation very much did not, and I'd hoped mine would, but again... here we are. Afraid I don't have much to offer as An Old Man, but I look forward to your video. Pop culture versions of serious political movements are always lacking; but they are also necessary for change on the ground. Theory without praxis doesn't accomplish much.

I was around in the 2010s. Back when the bird site was still kinda usable, pre Musk. I actually loved every one of Anita's vids and was rather sad when she ended the series. These days it all blurs together a bit, Tropes vs Women and the backlash it produced, G'Gate, Zoe Quinn and Brianna Wu. My perspective is a European one though, I think only the bigger controversies actually reached us. One other important thing for me was starting to watch Natalie Wynn's videos in the 2010s, and then see her start to transition. I think that was one central component of my egg finally starting to crack. I don't see how I would be anything other than a rather boring interview partner though, but if you think differently, dms are open as they used to say on Twitter.

I would be happy to interview on pop feminism! I was pretty involved in online feminism of the early and mid 2010s on Tumblr and I also was doing irl organizing in the midwest at the time. I got burned out on both for a while in part because the two environments were operating on two different planes of reality and I really hated that.
