Skanking is a dance people do to a little genre of music called ska, and we’re all gonna be doing it with special guest former Game Informer editor John Carson on CrossFade! We’re talking about Streetlight Manifesto – ska princes of the early 2000s – and Nolan Potter, a retro psych rock artist Matt discovered recently and can’t stop listening to. Leave a song for us to listen to, or ANY question about music on this post today – Thursday, July 21!

On this episode, we’re talking about Streetlight Manifesto’s “Everything Goes Numb” and Nolan Potter’s “Music Is Dead.” What do you think about ska? Is it really good or mostly just funny? How about bands that sound like older bands? What’s your favorite song right now? Share your music-related thoughts with a comment on this post and we’ll pull some for when we record the episode!

Never heard CrossFade? It’s free, fun, and sexy!

CrossFade is a music podcast on the MinnMax network hosted by Matt Helgeson and produced by Jason Dafnis. Matt and a guest swap some of their favorite music and listen into it with each other. It’s a great way to hear new music and hear smart people talk about some of their favorite music.

Also, it’s YOUR SHOW as MinnMax supporters, so ask questions, leave songs, and let us know what you think! Even if we don’t get to your song this episode, we’ll add it to the CrossFade Community Spotify Playlist (https://spoti.fi/3aRRgox) and your song might be pulled on a future Community Shuffle episode, so keep sharing!

CrossFade is free for everyone, so subscribe and share with a friend before the next episode publishes: https://apple.co/3kWBb5K

Thanks for checking it out!

Hello, love that y’all are reviewing “Everything goes numb”. That opening song just hits you in the face. I think ska is genuinely great and as Mike Park mentioned in an earlier episode, right now is the best time to get into ska with acts like Catbite, JER, and Jeff Rosenstock putting out incredible ska music.

https://open.spotify.com/track/4KpAf7KlumTtHbJSS4lHTj?si=37aa8bde0ce14faf This song, Водограй, or "Waterfall", is one of the most popular, legendary Ukrainian pop songs out there and I think you can hear why. It's lyrics are also absolutely beautiful (if you can understand them). The singer, Nazariy Yaremchuk, is notable for having a very nazaly tone despite his baritone vocal range, which gave him a distinctive vocal style. There are a lot of different versions out there with different nuances in the form and tempo from different artists, but a good song is a good song at the end of the day. As a bonus, here is a video of me singing it recently at a small charity concert I organized in Brooklyn. Ukrainian is my second language and I learned it as an adult in Kyiv. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NF5_P0dvZII

I’m excited to hear John on the podcast. I have two questions one is I’m wondering is music part of your work day and how does it help? I’ve found myself reducing the podcasts I listen to and transitioning more to music and it’s having a calming effect. Second question what is favorite “dumb” song that you can’t justify but love. I think mine is 99 Luft Balloons. It doesn’t matter if it’s the original or English language covers it makes me smile.

How do y'all feel about the cultural tensions of Ska music? It comes with the strange racial baggage of a genre originating in Jamaica as an offshoot of Caribbean musical traditions and American Jazz, both predominantly black musical traditions, but is most well known for being a punk subgenre that is dominated by white artists that has evolved pretty far away musically from those roots. Additionally, it has the weird tension of being a subgenre of punk music, but is often looked down upon by people in that scene as nerd music and, ironically, being very juvenile. I personally love Streetlight Manifesto and Everything Goes Numb is one of my personal favorite albums, I just find it very interesting that Ska music is a lightning rod of cultural opinions.

Hey, I saw a 7 year old girl at an ice cream shop the other day wearing a Pink Floyd t-shirt. It was the Dark Side of the Moon cover on a pink shirt. Is that cool or not?

That is cool. It'd be cooler if she chose it because she likes the music but cool nonetheless.

This is fantastic. Can I leave a link to that video in the show notes?
