It's time to submit your comment for the third section of Chrono Cross! Even if you haven't hit the stopping point, feel free to submit a comment on what you've played so far. For this discussion, we're covering everything in the game from the "big change" to another "big change". Sorry for being so cagey, but we hope you understand what we're talking about here. Please don't spoil anything after that point in the comments.

Submit one comment below and please get specific. Don't write a long review, please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. I repeat: please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. We want to get to as many comments as possible. Let's get specific, submit a comment about your favorite character moment, dragon attack, animation from Harle, etc. The more specific you are, the higher the odds of us reading your comment during the discussion. We'll finish collecting comments on Tuesday morning.

Here's the first discussion in case you missed it - https://youtu.be/va0_nsRLTJ0 and here's the second! https://youtu.be/La7FbJzBnXI

We're recording The Deepest Dive on Chrono Cross on Tuesday night at 8pm Central, and we're actually going to try recording it live on MinnMax's Twitch channel.

You can unlock the podcast version of the discussion in your favorite podcast app by supporting MinnMax at the $5 tier.

I'm extremely behind because it took Episode 1 of the Deepest Dive to convince me to try the game out! I was struggling with the Guile/Pierre/Nicky decision and went with Guile, then accidentally died during the rock climbing part and realized I hadn't saved in about an hour. Decided it was an act of god telling me that Guile was the wrong choice and went with Nicky when I redid the section. Have any of you gone back on decisions or changed your mind so far? Loving the game! Can't wait to catch up in 2024!

Dear Dreamers, I've fallen behind, I wanted to share something from the last section. After I got Freaky Friday'ed and my best friends beat my butt the game cut immediately to the opening attract screen. I thought "That's neat the game is trying to fake me out, like losing that battle was bad." Then I realized the game had crashed so I had to refight Bunyip, Viper, and Lynx. Thank God for the fast forward and powered up mode cause otherwise I might've stopped there. Maybe I'll catch up, but I doubt it, Joe Dean

If you take Home Van to Another Gogh, Gogh sees Van's piggy bank in his bag and praises his "son" for taking an interest in finances and gives him a bigger piggy bank. Van gives Gogh the cracked shell which was a gift from the deceased mom and Gogh reminisces of happier times. What are some neat character interactions you've seen between characters of alternate worlds? (It's been tough keeping straight who is from which world and what each versions back story is!)

[Part 1] The scene where Lynx-Serge is ambushed by Dark Serge and Kid on Hermit's Hideaway is particularly impactful. Despite being a silent protagonist, we are made aware that Serge cares deeply for Kid through a poignant montage, and that his heart is wounded that she has taken Dark Serge's side against him; then, we find out that Harle has feelings for Serge as well, but mysteriously vanishes from the party. Powerful stuff. [Part 2] Several characters join the party all at once when reuniting on the S.S. Invincible, and it's a bit overwhelming with so many amazing characters suddenly available: Riddel is arguably the best spellcaster in the game, Marcy is unexpectedly powerful overall, and ZOAH IS A HALF-NAKED HUNK OF MAN-MEAT. It's also notable that Pip is the only character to re-join Serge in Lynx's body if you recruited him, earlier on -- "it's the inside that counts," he says. D'aww. Shout out to my Pipsqueaks! He's BACK, baby!!

I think Chrono Cross is a prime example of why PS1 nostalgia exists. It feels so bold and open-ended in both its narrative/system complexity and its art direction that its a fantastic example of Square learning what the PS1 could do and applying that knowledge just before the dawn of the PS2. It's a game that just FEELS like there's a lot more going on under the hood than Kingdom Hearts and FFX. Not a statement on their quality - it just seems as if this was a more personal project capstoning one of Square's most prolific eras

Karsh's side mission is one of the best in any game ever that really fleshes out himself, Riddel, and Dario. You're met with a familiar tale of a love triangle that turns violent with the addition of the Masamune, which you think brings out Karsh's inner desire to be with Riddel. When you finally meet the other Dario in Home World, you find out it was Dario who got possessed and Karsh killed him to seal the power away, but Lynx used this opportunity to obtain the power for himself. This incredible tale tying in with the main narrative was a highlight of this section for me. If only it didn't end with one of the worst boss battles I have played.

This is the section when we start to recruit some more of my favorite goofballs. Here I saved your father, ooos he is a mushroom now. Starky! Oh look a robot cyborg. I love it. I loved the chrono trigger references like Leene Square but when I played this 20 years ago I was still at this point under the impression these were just cute Easter eggs. More on that after the final section.

What's wrong with the Dario battle? Haven't done it yet this playthru

Dead Sea is the coolest environment in the whole game. The frozen waves and future ruins are so weird and mysterious, a bit scary yet somehow also sad. It really is a great payoff to all the rumors earlier in game and makes exploration a real treat.

Has anyone found the secret Bend of Time island? It doesn’t have a name pop up when you go next to it, but you can enter it if you choose too. I think it is between Marbule and Mount Pyre. Anyway the purpose of it is nothing story focused but you get to fight old enemies via portals for maybe elements or materials you need. Seems very inspired by the End of Time area in Chrono Cross

If they did a remake this environment would really shine

So is there time passing when you travel through dimensions? When we got back to our world, Leena is still watching her siblings swim and mom is telling us to go. So are we just heading back to that same moment ? Did our date even happen? Or is the day mundane enough that that’s every morning ?

So the second worst thing about this section of the game is looking at Lynx's character model as Serge the whole time. The first worst thing is when the game unequipped all your elements after each change! Body swapping Serge and Lynx was fine and makes sense why your elements wouldn't be equipped, but when you change back you are in your same body but a different form. I ran into battles completely unequipped to fight. This made me hate Lynx even more!!! Also someone in the first video described Chrono Cross as Suikoden with alternate dimensions. There actually is a Suikoden game that deals with alternate dimensions. Suikoden Tierkreis on the DS recruited characters from different dimensions. The game also was the only Suikoden game where the leader isn't a silent protagonist with a fully voiced cast!

So is Miguel and Leena descendants of Chrono and is this future a sign that trigger was for not ? Or just that even so it will always result this way as a loop.

He has a bunch of physical defense, and he will counter any element with the opposite element. Plus I hadn't been using Riddel and she is required to be in your party, so her stats ended up being a little lower for me. It just took a long time for me to whittle him down.
