Also, because we're continuing to grow, please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. We want to get to as many comments as possible so we can't read extensive novels from everybody. We hope you understand.

Please submit a comment below with your specific thoughts on the 2001 game's first five levels. Let's talk about your favorite line, gun, art asset, button layout, please get specific. As always, the more specific you are the higher the odds of us reading your comment during the discussion. The huge world that you get the scope of right from the start of the second mission us really driven home by the vehicles. I played a decent amount of FPS games around this Era, particularly loved time splitters, but NOTHING gave that feel of rushing through a huge world like the vehicles in Halo did at the time. It was a huge breakthrough. Also: were you ever truly playing halo if you weren't trying to cram a warthog into EVERY corridor possible?!

I think the classic Halo graphics do a better job of environmental storytelling; Halo feels like its slumbering. The new graphics are very bright and make the entire installation feel fully functional- no mystery.

I've been playing with the original graphics this playthrough and I totally agree it's a completely different experience.

I've never played the story (was 7 when Halo came out and grew up having a PlayStation, no Xbox) and just had my mind blown that Cortana is the naming inspiration for Microsoft's assistant. So cool. Still have no desire to use Cortana though.

This game is amazing, but I think it's even more amazing in the context of other shooters of its time. Doom, Quake, GoldenEye, etc. are all based around narrow hallways with rooms full of enemies. The first level makes it seem like this will be a similar experience, only to throw it out the window with the wide-open, scenic environments of the second mission. The environmental design really sets Halo apart.

My best memories from the first 5 missions are the beginning of "The Silent Cartographer". Landing on that beach gave me nostalgia of storming Normandy Beach in Medal of Honor: Frontline, although on a much smaller scale. The sniping /sneaking intro for "Truth and Reconciliation" would be a close second. Even though the concept was the same "go here and kill enemies, rinse/repeat", every level was varied just enough so every time felt like a new experience. Worst memory was finding out you couldn't equip the plasma sword or ride in the Banshee, what a bummer that was.

One other small note: I've been playing on the OG Xbox and I've forgotten how odd the controller was over the years. Is there any other system where the start button is on the far left side of the controller?

Man, what a hell of a game. Glad you guys picked this one! On the bridge of the Autumn there’s a bulletin board with a few hilarious posts. Somebody’s selling a Hide -a- Bunk Combo, there’s a callback roster for Marines auditioning for the musical South Pacific, even the Superintendent from ODST’s slogan “Keep it Clean”. But most importantly, there’s a sign that says “Scooters are for squirts, no scooters on deck.” I think we all missed out on what could have been one of the greatest vehicles in the Halo saga. Also, Jen Taylor plays other characters in the game than just Cortana! Marty O'Donnell has said she's also the pilot of the escape pod in the cutscenes between levels 1 and 2. Love you guys!

Boy, level 5 is rough. The outdoor areas with the bridge, Tank, Ghost, and Banshee are great, but the interior encounters send the player through a nearly identical copy of the same square room filled with enemies 10 times! This is something Halo CE is notorious for, and while you tend to see backtracking across the series, I don't remember ever seeing it quite like this in later Halo games.

If it's not too late, my main takeaway from playing this half - further than I've played Halo: CE before - is how tough and engaging the AI is. They flank, they take cover, they jump out of nowhere and they take a crap-ton of bullets. There were times on the Assault mission when I had to restart over and over because of low health and low ammo. It's quite incredible, but gets gnarly even on normal.

Hello Deepest Dive! And Halo: CE to boot! I have been a Halo fan for years. From the incredibly detailed Instruction Manual to the LAN party multiplayer sessions in the dorms. Though, the one thing I felt that Bungie nailed outside of the Magnum being the best weapon in Combat Evolved, was the sense of wonder of the world. Each mission, especially the first several drop you in an unexplored and untamed wildernesses. And I maintain, Bungie makes some of the best Skyboxes in gaming. -BluMayhem
