Pretty good conversation about BOTW. But you can go just about anywhere in Skyrim, GTA 5, and Far Cry 4 for instance. You have been able to climb anywhere in AC for a while. And I think you can kill the final boss in Far Cry 4 immediately. I think the true BOTW innovation may be fully breakable weapons, but idk if other games have done that.

..and most people hated that mechanic. I think I’m with JeffM on this one. BotW was a fantastic game, I loved it, but I personally wouldn’t call it revolutionary.

The Far Cry 4 thing was a gimmick/easter egg, not a game mechanic. If you missed the initial opportunity, you had to complete the game normally. You didn't get to confront Pagan Min whenever you wanted. Also, if you chose the quick route you got a completely different ending, in which Pagan Min doesn't die at all.
