Back in March we celebrated the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons by kicking off The Deepest Dive with Ana Diaz, Sarah Podzorski, and Kelsey Lewin. After two discussions we parted ways, promising to reunite when the world needed us...

This week we're back with a bonus discussion! On Wednesday we'll be posting The Deepest Dive all about what we've been doing on the island in the months since the last episode, the ins and outs of the stalk market, and how the game has aged.

Submit a comment below for us to read on the show about your thoughts on the game since the last discussion. One comment only, please. The more specific the comment the better.

You can catch up on The Deepest Dive for Animal Crossing by watching the first discussion right here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9z3bgRIGoU

Thanks so much, everybody!

I was looking forward to playing Animal Crossing as an escape from reality. In my real life I suffer from an awkward affliction that causes me to drop fruit on the ground instead of eating it. I also do the same thing with Medicine. Instead of taking it I just involuntarily drop it on the ground. So you can imagine my distress when playing Animal Crossing and the exact same thing happens. Man, I wish they'd swap around the options to 'eat' and 'drop'. Also Have you noticed how the music during the ceremony is really beautiful. It's really stirring. I start to get a bit choked up when that song plays and I'm surrounded by all my animal friends as we celebrate the opening of a new set of stairs.

I’ve almost just completely stopped playing it the last couple weeks. I lost interest mostly because people won’t come to my island, or I never get invited to someone else’s. So I haven’t been able to trade, shop at other stores, or any of the other stuff that comes with the social aspect of the game. And so I got bored with it. But then yesterday Felicia Day, gave her weekly reminder to buy them turnips, so I jumped back in I bought the turnips in hope that this week my time might finally come. I’m gonna try and bribe people online to come. Like for example, today my shop has the “Cute Bed” for sale, and already I know certain people out there definitely want it. So I’m gonna get on later and post a dodo code and see what happens. Lol I’ll update ya tomorrow morning on how it went! 😅

I wonder if I would not have fallen off the game if I owned it digitally. Popping in the cartridge just to do 15 minutes of island chores is an extra step that makes it a little less appealing.

What is the deal with collecting paintings? It seems that Redd only shows up maybe once a week and then there is a decent chance to get a fake. I’ve almost completely finished the fossil exhibits in the museum but it seems it will take many lifetimes to get anywhere on the art section. On the plus side we have a beach exhibit for all the fake art. It’s right next to the turtle death arena (complete with wrestling ring and cameras).

Okay what can I look forward to when it comes to bamboo DIY’s in the future? I just got the game about a week ago, and got my first bamboo shoots! Pandas and bamboo are kind of my schtick and my island is called Panda Land, so you can see where I am going with all this.

Hello islanders Now with all my friends having unlocked terraforming my favorite part of animal crossing has become getting tours of everyones island. Im suprised on how unique they all feel compared to earlier visits. Although the terraforming itself is tedious Its also cool to know how much time and work friends put into it! How deep have you all dived into remaking your whole island?

I don't want to be negative, but I've completely fallen off since the Earth Day stuff. I really enjoyed the month or so of playing, but now it feels monotonous. A lot of my villagers repeat things I've heard dozens of times over, I can only buy one art piece every couple days and it is always fake. What is it that you guys keep getting from the game? Do I not feel joy? Thanks for the deepest dive, keep up the amazing work!

This is my first game in the series and I'm shocked at how much I'm still enjoying it. I originally bought it because my wife wanted to play it, but she has now completely fallen off and I haven't missed a day of playing since release. I'm at over 215 hours and as of today we have a five star island. What I'm wondering is how you all are feeling about the game this many days in. Are you still playing daily? What's your hour count? And how do you think this game compares to others in the series?

How did you all feel about the credits rolling after KK Slider comes? It felt anticlimactic to me since he came when I only had 9 villagers but his performance was fun and his version of the main theme was delightful.

Over a month in and I have come to love the ability to redesign my character whenever. In older games I use to make multiple characters and have them move out when I had a new idea for a character to play as. Now I just walk over to mirror and just like that I have a new character to play as. It's so handy cause every since Wild World my friends and I have always role played in animal crossing. Also the nintendo app is a godsend as it allows us to type faster.

This is my first Animal Crossing, and I have enjoyed it a lot and put a lot of time into it. Thanks for doing this Deepest Dive! One hidden interaction in this game sticks out to me as unlike anything else in the game--in the Able Sisters store Sable initially won't talk to you, but when you persistently talk to her every day she eventually opens up, and Sable and Mabel tell you their sad backstory about losing their parents and how they miss their sister Label since she left to try to become a designer. It was surprisingly moving and much more in depth than anything any other characters share with you. I wish there were more backstories like this that you can unlock for other characters. What dark secrets are Blathers and Celeste hiding???

While I don't think being able to terraform your island is a bad idea, it's ended up hurting the game for me a bit? Almost as if there was too much I was able to do early on. In New Leaf the entire process was drip fed at a pace the kept me wanting more and where every addition to the island was kinda exciting because not a whole lot happened, but in New Horizons I dove in deep, spent 200 hours in the first couple months literally rebuilding the island from scratch, made more bells than I'll ever need because gaming the stalk market is so easy in 2020, and now I haven't touched the game in a couple weeks. I ultimately feel I didn't get to know any of my villagers as well as I did in New Leaf because I was constantly running around in construction mode.
