There was a lot more I wanted to fit on this page but there simply wasn't enough room. So this page will end on a cheap cliffhanger whilst I cram the rest onto the next part. Sorry! But at least I kept things visually interesting, right?
Thanks for supporting this work as always.
TL Notes:
- ‘The Site of Broken Dreams’: This is inspired by the abandoned Coco Palms Resort in Wailuā, Kauaʻi County, Hawaiʻi. The hotel was built in the 1950s and was immortalised in Elvis Presley’s 1961 movie, Blue Hawaii. However, Hurricane Iniki (ʻiniki meaning "strong and piercing wind”) decimated the resort in 1992. A long post-hurricane recession, spiralling insurance and renovation costs putting off buyers, (along with complications with indigenous peoples wanting to reclaim the land as scared Hawaiian grounds) means that to this day, the former resort continues to fall into dilapidation (correct as of 13 January 2022).
- Orbeni Bulletin: This is a reference to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, which was the longest running newspaper in Hawaii until 2010. It was subsequently bought by a Canadian media conglomerate, and spiritually continues as the present-day Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Orbeni is Hawaiian for space, a reference to this (apparently, you battle those two trainers in the games).
- Clifford Redgrave/ Emily-Elizabeth Howard: In reference to a certain red dog…
- Todd Snap/ Rita Phillips: A subtle nod to the human characters in this video game.
- Qīngxū City: A reference to a fictional location in this video game. 清心 Qīngxīn is Chinese for ‘pure heart’.
- Makamaka: Hawai’ian for close friend.
