and why the Technics SL-P1200 is one of the exceptions.

This one took me a long time to make inspite of its modest length. I’ve put this down to the fact that it’s really two different videos in one.

In the first half I take a look at the rapid early evolution of CD player design - up to the point where that evolution pretty much stopped just as soon as it had started.

I felt this backstory was needed before I could go on to explain why I find the Technics SL-P1200 that I demonstrate in the second half, to be so appealing.

I hope you enjoy it.

It’s been a funny old week here, I feel I’ve fallen way behind on everything so I must apologise if I haven’t managed to reply to everyone’s messages. I’ve 565 emails flagged for a reply - those are just the ones that I really wanted to get to...one day.

Thanks for all your kind words, stay well and keep smiling.

How CD players got boring & why the Technics SL-P1200 is one of the exceptions

Forty years ago CD players were the cool new thing. The first machines were amazing technological marvels with interesting designs. But when it came to launching their second generation CD players - all the models from all the different manufacturers started to look pretty much the same. In this video I'll explain what happened and then show that there were some exceptions to this - you just need to think outside the (oblong) box. I then go on to demonstrate the exception(al) CD player I bought - a Technics SL-P1200. 00:00 Show me the media 02:52 Things started off well 04:34 But then this happened 06:32 So I bought this 07:32 But I really wanted this 08:53 Let’s look at the SL-P1200 10:34 How quick 11:15 So what can it do 16:11 Summary 16:56 Patreon credits LINKS Technics SL-P1200 machines for sale on ebay (AFFILIATED LINK) https://ebay.us/KOFfOz Audioscope (A retailer of classic HiFi - who I borrowed a couple of old pictures from) https://www.audioscope.net Philips CD Prototype introduction video https://youtu.be/Wo0p1ZRO7kk Vintage Brochures https://www.hifi-archiv.info The Vintage Knob - Great resource for old HiFi info http://www.thevintageknob.org --------------- SUBSCRIBE ------------------ http://www.youtube.com/user/Techmoan?sub_confirmation=1 ------------- Merchandise ----------------- https://teespring.com/stores/techmoan-merch ------------- SUPPORT --------------- This channel can be supported through Patreon https://www.patreon.com/techmoan *******Patrons usually have early access to videos******* ---------- Outro Music ----------- Over Time - Vibe Tracks https://youtu.be/VSSswVZSgJw ------ Outro Sound Effect ------ ThatSFXGuy - https://youtu.be/5M3-ZV5-QDM ------ AFFILIATED LINKS/ADVERTISING NOTICE ------- All links are Affiliated where possible. A) Patrons https://www.patreon.com/techmoan usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.
