It might not be that he's got a heart condition, I think it's panic attacks. Ellie's gotten close to him, and he can't handle the idea that he might lose another "daughter". He feels like he failed Sarah, Tess, and who knows how many others, and that he's going to fail Ellie.

Evan Fowler

The movie is the Neil Simon movie, "The Goodbye Girl". It's about a single mother and her daughter and their struggle to find a husband/stepfather. Great movie. One of Richard Dreyfuss' best performances. Granted, I don't really know why that's their choice to show a roomful of children either, but I saw it when I was a kid and liked it. I was a weird kid, though.
