Bill's town was totally different in the game. Frank had already left him and hung himself (I think Frank was bit). In the behind the episode feature they said they thought this was a chance to tell a better story for Bill. Also there were hints about Bill being gay. Ellie finds magazines, and there's a letter from Frank that Joel can find.

Also, most of the Bill section of the game was just gameplay. I am all for them replacing gameplay with great storytelling. The best part about this is that the episode actually is about Joel. It's about the changes that Joel is going through and the importance of love and connection in this world, only told via parallel. Loved it. Beautifully told.
