I'm confused about how the train works. Like, if it's infinite, and you left your friend on the train and stepped off... How would you find them again when you go back? If it's truly infinite, you would have a 1 out of infinity chance of the carriage you check being the one your friend is on. Or is it actually a finite number (as viewed from outside) but they reset before you loop around?

I don't think it's infinite, it's just that the monsters respawn somehow and get harder as you progress. Like Jake said with the ants, they were in the same car when they fought the first ants. I think the bosses are just people like Finn who never stopped fighting or just got on the train. That's my takeaway when I first watched this episode.
