So with the librarian and bookseller; I always saw it as they were two ponies that she saw so often that they considered her a friend even though she didn't really understand why. She interacted with them so often that they grew to care about her.

This episode was a real blast from the past; I'm not sure if you realized, but Twilight ditching Moondancer's party was directly from the very first few minutes of Season 1 Episode 1. You'll also notice that Moondancer is a Twilight recolor. She represents the path Twilight could've gone down if she hadn't gone to Ponyville. Moondancer clearly idolized Twilight, and having Twilight bail on her like that (even if it was to go face Nightmare Moon) did a number on her. It's a really brilliant storyline; taking this one scene (seemingly inconsequential, yet fundamental to Twilight's character) and building a whole episode off it. It's an important lesson that small actions can lead to major consequences you never expect, or are even aware of. I think this resonates with a lot of people who have drifted away from their friend group growing up or in college. It's not easy to maintain that when you aren't in regular contact, and once people start moving away from home, it's hard to stay in touch. Twilight's friends visiting Lyra in Ponyville is a nice explanation for why we've seen them repeatedly in backgrounds of scenes, though they haven't had real roles until now. Haycarts (or whatever it is) is likely a reference to the French philosopher Renee Descartes (pronounced day-cart).

This one's one of my favorites. It's interesting to see how what seems like an insignificant moment from Season 1, Episode 1 actually had long term consequences. I can completely get where Moon Dancer is coming from. I'm the sort who forms a strong bond with those I choose to call friends. And even though I'd tell myself over and over that it doesn't matter and I shouldn't dwell on it, I'd probably be just as hurt and self-defeating as she became. Another part I love about this episode is that the party actually failed. Most cartoons would have had Pinkie's party instantly succeed, and Moon Dancer would have done a complete 180 and been friends again all of a sudden. MLP had the balls to have Moon Dancer basically say, "No, this isn't ok. You can't fix this with just a party." She really needed to hear it from Twilight. And not just a simple, "I'm sorry," because that didn't work either. She needed Twilight to completely understand how she felt. That is a far more realistic reaction that the typical "Throw a party and everything's fixed" ending that could have happened. As was mentioned above, I do believe I saw Starlight Glimmer at their dinner in Canterlot. Wonder what she's up to? Another nice part of the episode is Minuette. Her blue and white coat and mane earned her the nickname of "Colgate" from the fans. Obviously, this was one fan name that couldn't become official, but they did give her a moment to be in the spotlight, much to the delight of many fans. I really love when the show examines the pain that some of these ponies are feeling deep down. Speaking of which, next week is another one of my all-time favorite episodes. Looking forward to it.

Happy horse noises. It's the little details in life that count.

This episode makes me appreciate Twilight a lot more.

The execution is a bit off because they have to have the characters learn these lessons in 20 minutes. But it's super relatable in showing how some friendships can pick up right where they left off while other friendships may have fractured into something much more difficult to repair over time. I have some friends myself that I only see once every couple years and we can pick up like we see each other every day when we meet up. And of course there are people I used to be super close with who won't even give me the time of day when we happen to run across each other nowadays. Also, a great throwback to the first episode of the series.
