This episode was a love letter to the fans, it focused on a lot of the backgroud characters, You'll need to watch it several time to get all the references. This episode was the one My Little Pony jumped the shark.

Some of the questions you have will be answered when you react to the Bronies react link for the 100th episode. That I sent you. The episode was created with fan fiction stories they have created. Thus they know about a lot of these things. Also the episode was written by the same author as the premier for which yo too reacted to both the episode and Bronies react.

This is the 100th episode of the show and it was a fan letter to all the fans of the show

This is like one of my favorite episodes of season 5

Reversal Ring +3

Yeah the 100th episode was mostly a love letter to the fans. It's mostly good for watchers who've been somewhat involved in the community and background characters

I suggest watching the bronies react to the episode

Where to even begin with this one? Prepare for a wall of text. Overall story concept: As others mentioned, this was targeted towards older fans in particular. The show had been going for almost 5 years, and the creators knew that a lot of fans would make art, theories, and fan fiction surrounding the background characters of the show. As such, they wanted to acknowledge how the fans were able to bring the stories of these often nameless background characters to life. Ponies like Lyra and Bon Bon had countless fan fictions written about them, often with them living together and sometimes, as you guessed, with them being more than just friends. And that's just one small example. The showrunners decided that episode 100 would focus almost entirely on background characters, and that the episode would confirm a few fan theories etc. The mayor's speech at the end of the wedding is referring to both the characters gathered at the wedding, AND to the fans whose stories and art helped enrich the world of MLP behind the scenes. Now on to the references: Derpy - Just having her be a main character was HUGE. As we mentioned back in season 2, Derpy had been heavily censored when there were complaints about her. The show staff hated the censorship, and this episode intentionally put her in the spotlight to let their feelings about it be known. She is just as clutzy and derp-eyed as ever, and this was the first time she got a speaking role since she was censored in the first place. You can't even begin to imagine how much people cheered when she started speaking in the beginning of the episode. Doctor Whooves - Or Doc, as he's referred to in the episode. I actually interviewed Peter New, his voice actor (also voiced Big Macintosh), so this is straight from the horses mouth: Doctor Whooves IS The Doctor from Doctor Who. There is a mix of the 9th, 10th, and 11th Doctors' personalities within him, but it was played straight up as if the pony is an actual reincarnation of The Doctor. His scarf is a direct nod to the 4th Doctor, as well. This, too, was an ongoing fan theory that got confirmed in the episode. It even went so far as to having the BBC acknowledge and promote Dr Whooves before the 50th anniversary of the show. It is also heavily implied that Derpy represents the Dr Who companion, Rose Tyler. He is also often seen with a pony named Roseluck as a nod to Rose Tyler. His outburst during the wedding that "Of course! It was love that makes them ignite!" was a direct nod to the 9th Doctor's outburst "Everybody lives, Rose. Just this once... everybody lives!" Lyra and Bon Bon - So these were two of the first background ponies that fans latched onto. Many, as you guessed, imagined that they were more than friends. The two had appeared together quite a lot in the background, but this was the first time they were actually shown to be living together. Bon Bon being a secret monster-hunting agent for Princess Celestia is a nod to the fact that Bon Bon had spoken several times in the show... but never with the same voice. There were old theories that she was a changeling or that she was a spy, and so they went with it. Her real name being Special Agent Sweetie Drops is a nod to the name given on her merchandise up to that point as, due to copyrights, they couldn't use the name Bon Bon (which was given to her by fans). Having her name confirmed in-show was a pretty big deal, as was seeing her relationship with Lyra being confirmed. Lyra herself was also named by the fans. Her last name is Heartstrings, which was what her toys named her as until this point. From here onwards, her toys and merch named her as Lyra Heartstrings. Her line at the end about stealing Bon Bon's expensive imported oats and eating them is a direct reference to a fan-animated short called "Ponies with Hats" which itself is a spoof of a series by FilmCow called Llamas with Hats. The shorts are very much adult-oriented, involving murder among other things, so having them directly referred to in-show was a pretty big deal. DJ Pon3 and Octavia - Two more background ponies that early fans latched onto and wrote many stories about. And, you guessed it, people often wrote about them as being a couple, but in stories where they weren't, they were often musical rivals. The show decided to pay homage to both by having them live together... while still being rivals. An ongoing thing in the show is that DJ Pon3 (also called Vinyl Scratch) is mute. This is because there was a very well known fan voice actress who voiced her in many fan-made YouTube shorts. Everyone associated that as her voice, so to honor that in the actual show, they just have DJ Pon3 never speak. The bowling ponies - So the 3 ponies who bowl with Doctor Whooves are based on The Big Lebowski. You have the Jeff Bridges "The Dude" pony with a rug cutie mark (It really tied the room together!) and always says "Man", then you have the John Goodman pony, and a Steve Buscemi pony. Again, another very adult reference. Around the mid-point of the episode, we have Octavia ask Sweetie Belle what's going on, and Sweetie says, "Maybe it's just a friendship problem, and it will all be over in a half hour or so." This is a completely meta reference to the show itself, in which friendship problems regularly pop up, and have to be solved within the show's half-hour run time. Steven Magnet - Wow. So, the sea serpent all the way from Season 1, episode 1. He didn't have a name back then... but there's an interesting reason why he's called Steven Magnet. In the old days of YouTube closed-captioning, you might remember that YouTube's auto-captioning was quite horrendous. Well, captioning for Season 1, Episode 1 of MLP had the line "Sea Serpent" be completely butchered with "Steven Magnet" appearing on the screen. Early fans took to calling the sea serpent Steven Magnet from that point onward as a joke... ...and those clever showrunners took a joke from 4 seasons ago and made it a reality, officially naming the sea serpent based off a horrible YouTube captioning translation. He also fixes Cranky's baldness by chopping off his moustache... coming around full circle from back when Rarity chopped off her tail to fix his moustache back in season one. Princess Luna and Princess Celestia - This is a short one, but a lot of fans imagined that the princesses bicker and argue over silly, small things. And, of course, here we have them doing just that at the wedding. Gummy - Honestly, nobody expected him to talk. Ever. No real reference here, it was just great. He's voiced by the same voice actor who does Snips and Steven Magnet. The changeling at the wedding - So around this time, there were a LOT of fan fiction stories involving changelings who escaped from Queen Chrysalis's hive and tried to live in Ponyville. Heck, even I'm guilty of writing one. So naturally, there is a single changeling at the wedding to represent this. Honestly, there are probably a lot more that I misssed. This was just a huge episode for fans. Lots of weird stuff, and it was great.

lol I love the amount of "what the hell is going on" faces in this episode yeah this was the biggest episode as it was a blatant thank you to the bronie community.as you know the show was only going to run 67 episodes so that it could be syndicated to other networks earning hasbro more money in the long run. but they saw the fandom and knew they could keep going and they did and as you know it got a full 9 seasons so as a thank you to the fans they did this a "love letter" to the fans written by M.A. Larson himself (same one who did magical mystery cure S3E13). I could goon about all the small details But I suggest looking at TheSlorg's comment as s/he (sorry don't know your gender slorg) sums it up the best. other then this episode there is 1 more call back to actually a leak of information on the show its very suttle and fans who where not in the deep of the show missed it but those that awaited every moment of the show and fed into all the info being released both official and leaked noticed it. oh and also greatest episode is coming up if you thought this was amazing their is 1 more this season that in many fans opinions is the greatest episode to ever air. not saying what could happen or when it will but you'll know it . ya know what I'll give you one hint. Indiana Jones. when it happens you'll understand

As Melody 504 mentioned, this episode has a Bronies react episode about it, and you should watch it.

To understand this episode, you rly had to be in the fandom back then. I joined rather late to the party, but after some investigation you rly learn to appreciate the episode. For example Dr. Hoofs ( the british accent pony with the time cutiemark ) was always joked about as beeing Dr. Who, thus the time references ^^ Also that derpy/muffin speaks more than just a few words is also something the fandom always wanted. There are so many references to fandom speculations, fandom videos and other stuff. The whole episode is pretty much a whole reference to the whole fandom and what they did in the past years :-)

I love how confusing and crazy this episode is if you weren't part of the fandom back in the day. Great reactions!
