Jackson is the one that gives the lore imo. He is like the book smart person that Twilight is in MLP. Carter is smart too, but more on the science side. Jackson is more on the lore one. Also the sneezing is why he was immune this episode at the start. The doctor said he takes regular doses of anti-histamine for his allergies. Thus he is working on the allergies part. When he got in the dark side, he had no medication thus no anti-histamine. Which is how he eventually got ill too. Oneil is a tough guy maybe that's why he resisted it this long?

On that place the planet must always be facing their sun as to have constant dark and light side. In the beginning they said the malp(the machine they send first) detected colder temperatures in the dark side. The people on the light side wear very little amount of clothes. Indicating it's always warm there. The temperature amplitude must be kinda small. Those here on earth are quite a bit higher. We just don't know enough about that world to have an idea why there is such a fenomenon in this episode. I know on earth the areas around the poles have such thing during different seasons.
