I think you're being a bit too hard on Aang here. He's a 12 year old who lost everyone except Appa and Bumi, now his best friend who was frozen in the iceberg with him for 100 years was taken from him in a desert. He's only reacting naturally. Its the only one he has from the air nomad culture that he knew back then.

Also he's a monk that's taught to value all life and just killed for the first time.

Aang needs a little smack on the back the head. There is never a reason to lose yourself in rage. Sadly he has no adults with him to show him the mature way of dealing with things.

anger is a stage of grief. i actually kind of liked seeing aang rage and be a brat, because its such a stark difference from how he usually is (passive, cheerful, friendly). i think it was a really effective way to communicate just how upset losing appa was for him- he didn't just go "oh no!" and cry for a bit and then feel better. he was so consumed by grief and anger that he ended up lashing out at those who were only trying to help, which is an unfortunate but common occurrence, and (as you said and others have said) aang is just a kid so he probably doesn't know how to deal with that anger in a healthy way. its hard to watch, i definitely dont blame you for not liking it, but i loved it for his character. it shows there's more sides to him than "peaceful upbeat monk avatar who is the best and here to save the world". sometimes he's wrong. sometimes he's like, human.

Absolutely! This show was amazing at showing kids the full range of human emotion and experience. It taught them how to move past and overcome such feelings in a healthy way, often by showing the wrong way first.

I don't like Aang in this episode either. I think you're a bit hard on him, but I also think the other comments are a bit too lenient. I'm somewhere in between. He has a right to be upset, and he shouldn't have to "man up" just because he was born the Avatar. But taking it out on his friends and placing blame on Toph is completely uncalled for and I don't excuse that. He can be mad at the sandbenders, but he should still put his friends first.
