Basically Aang can’t control when he goes into the Avatar state so that’s why he couldn’t escape. The only time he has gone into the Avatar state is when someone else he cares about has been hurt or is in danger rather than himself - or it was Avatar Roku working through Aang when he was in the fire nation 🔥.

the way i took it, zuko freed the avatar not to make zhao look bad, but because he couldn't have zhao be the one to capture the avatar. zuko would help aang escape if it meant he still had a chance of being the one to capture him. the idea that he's doing it to spite zhao is funny tho- i would too lol, i hate zhao so much. not even hate, i just think he's a pathetic jerk also, this episode reminds me of how much i love aang! the "uh i think you dropped these" line seemed so genuine, him even holding out the arrows for them to take back, it was rlly funny and endearing 2 me :pleading:

Aang's cell was reasonably well designed. There is no earth or water to bend and Aang can't effectively fire bend. Air is useful but won't get you out of steel chains. Denying access is the key to imprisoning benders.
