Lots of lore in this one. Firstly, we see the ponies travel once again to the Castle of the Two Sisters. This was the castle they ended up in during the second episode of the series, and where Nightmare Moon was defeated. Twilight ends up reading the Journal of the Two Sister, in which Celestia has written that the castle was designed with all these hidden switches and tunnels because, quite frankly, both sisters were amused by and used to play with them. Even more interesting: The Journal of the Two Sisters is an actual book that can be purchased, and contains an enormous amount of world-building within. We also meet the Pony of Shadows in this episode. Is he or she a friend or foe? Will we meet them again later on, or is this just a one-off joke that will never be mentioned again. Can't tell you :) And yes, all those references are intentional.

This has always been one of my favorite episodes; it just has so much going on and some great Scooby-Doo style shennanigans. This illustrates a lot of the characters' core traits, and I've always thought it would be a good episode to suggest to a skeptical viewer who's on the fence about the show. The only downside is it spoils Twilight's wings, but I'd rather have someone give the show a chance with that spoiler than not watch it at all. And yes, there's a lot of references in this one; the MLP creators are never one to miss a good homage or horse-pun

In the MLP comics you find that shadow ponies a very much a thing. They're called the Umbra, and King Sombra is king of the Umbra

yeah the staff is like many of us they love to put references in the show that they know the young children may not get but know the adult fans will because at this time the brony fandom was huge and the staff was interacting with the fans at conventions so you get a lot of things that are for the adults to enjoy whether its small things like castlevania or doing an entire character like daring do after indiana jones

I agree on you regarding Equestria girls it’s kind of strange and not that interesting anymore they are basically like high school girls in a human world

Still not seeing how any of those make for a better reason then 'she earned it'. As to her Cutie mark being on the Tree, not convinced that is some destiny thing. The Tree, the Element of Magic even pre-Mane 6, Twilight, and quite a few other Unicorns with ties to magic all share the same six pointed star emblem. I'd say it's more likely that the star is just the Equestrian symbol for 'magic' as a fundamental force. For this ep, spooky scary castle fun times, and yeah the writers love slipping in references to pop culture things. Bit of background executive mandate, that's the reason AJ and RD wear wearing the bee suits, thus removing any real danger or threat from that test. Execs required that be added.

Hello sir. I highly doubt the show would make Twilight say “my cutie mark” if that was just some symbol. Also, PC said on her song that that was her destiny to become a princess, and she just chose that moment to make her princess because she thought she was ready.
