From what I remember most things relating to the origins of spirits is explained in The Legend of Korra. Don't quote me on it because it's been a long time since I've seen it, but don't worry about it too much.

The origin of spirits from the person up top is in Korea I think. You think General Zaho is bad. You have not seen baddest yet of a few characters in the future. You will also learn about spirits again later on.Also, this was the first show I ever watched and finished when it aired live. Glad people are watching this show and loving it.

To be fair Zhao's plan wasn't that terrible; Aang has not displayed particularly good offensive skills. He's mostly used bending to evade and run. Pinning him down in the temple with hostages and a large force is a pretty good strategy; better than most attempts to apprehend Aang so far. unfortunately for him Aang has assistance from the much more experienced Roku at this encounter. I think the burning rocks may be some sort of sulfur compound, which would stink pretty bad.
