If you want, after S4E02, I'd recommend watching the 1st Equestria Girl Movie, even though it's a spin-off, it's still canonically between Season 3 and 4. But since you've already watched the 1st half of the S4 premiere, it would be weird to just stop halfway for a spin-off.

Ultimately, we've gotten as much explanation for Twilight's ascenscion as we're going to get; the transcendental understanding of friendship (and therefor magic, since Friendship Is Magic) combined with the immense power of the Elements elevated her into something more; imbuing her with the collective essence of her friends.

Thanks Spencer, Adderbane and some others told me this before I watched it and I still forgot cuz I was excited to jump into the season lol I will definitely watch it next week and throw it up. I appreciate the help!

It was noted very early in the series that Twilight was exceptionally strong in magic. We've also now seen that friendship itself is magic. Celestia figured that out, and sent Twilight to go make friends in Ponyville, which was the first step in her ascension. You wondered if Celestia had a plan, and she most certainly did.

i dont think twilight just became a princess because she learned her lessons- how i gathered it, princess celestia TURNED her into an alicorn BECAUSE she passed the tests that celestia had for her. also, like TheSlorg said, twilight is exceptionally talented at magic, so that probably has something to do with it :)

fun fact tho its clearly not (because show is rated for kids) mentioned the potion she drank is actually very similar to a native american elixir that was taken to promote spiritual connection and provided hallucinate dream like states of mind i cant remember the name but it was a white elixir like this. as for discord he is totally reformed but that doesn't mean he's good. he is still after all the lord of chaos

It's is implied that before becoming the Ruler of Equestria, Celestia and Luna were more active in fighting monsters, and if necessary they can do it again, but since they have other responsibilities they have to give that responsibility to other people.

While the way the show... and a certain writer in particular, handle Celestia and Luna is just plain wrong...... neither are they useless. I do not get this mindset that clearly the head of state also needs to be the one handling every single problem as well, she's got a country to run. Leadership is about knowing how to properly delegate things like this. But yes the show fails to present this either.... And, how is just hooking up with some dude who's only special because mommy/daddy had a title better for becoming a Princess then proving yourself worthy of ascension? This wasn't a case of Celestia decided it was time and zapped some wings on her, Celestia helped her along the path and guided her, but it was Twilight's actions alone that earned her her wings. It's more like a King Author deal, she did something so special and unique that only a true Princess could do and so earned the title. Yeaaaah, these are all things that have been said a LOT among the fandom if you can't tell.....
