I promise you that Spike gets much better. His episodes early on are pretty bad in my opinion, but he really grows as a character and has some great focus episodes later in the series.

Timberwolves appeared about a season ago, when they were howling in the forest as part of Granny Smith's story about the founding of Sweet Apple Acres. Seeing as they seem to stray fairly close to the orchard, it was a popular fan theory for a while that they were responsible for the demise of AJ's parents. This was never a popular episode (though Timberwolves feature often in fanfiction as "monster in the dark") so I don't really have anything more to say.

yeah you pretty much nailed it at the end they are a mystical being formed from the dead timber of the everfree forest. they cant be killed but can be destroyed/defeated if that makes any sense. as for this episode this is regarded as one of the worst of the series for how they portrayed spike, we've seen him he is sometimes childish and dumb on his actions but never this clumsy and idiotic. 2 more episodes before the series end and what was originally the series end I can't wait to see your reaction to 13 you'll understand why this was such a big episode and then we can get intom season 4 and OMG is it friggin epic

I like some of his earlier episodes, particularly the first two where he has to deal with his dragon-ness after being raised in a world of ponies. I just think he doesn't often get the respect he deserves and he's this bizarre mix of being a child, yet showing maturity and responsibility which can make some writing seem off for him.

People didn't like this episode much as some others have pointed out, but Spike had demonstrated competency in cleaning and cooking and stuff, as he's done so for Twilight and himself and here he's just written as utterly useless. I chalk it up to him being overeager to please and trying to hard, but it's still far from a 'good' episode for poor Spike. Whereas Spike was your favorite starting out, he became one of my favorites. For the longest time, he was 'meh' but he eventually made his way to my fourth favorite character in the show. :)

And the third of the early trifecta of fail. MMDW gets a lot of people pushing back that it's not really as bad as it's early rep as 'worst episode ever' warrants. Putting Your hoof Down will have people defend it on the grounds that Fluttershy did something assertive and that justifies all the bad writing... no one defends this one. Every character had an Idiot Ball lodged firmly up their plots for this story to happen. As you can tell, I do not like this one, no one really does, and yet.... I can't say this is the worst ep of the show, that is coming much later. Behind the scenes, there was a lot of back and forth on who to blame for how bad this ep turned out, since writing and story credits were shared by Merriwether Williams and Dave Polski. Polski was fairly quick to make clear he had nothing at all to do with this, he had come up with a story about this same thing happening, but that it was Rarity Spike swore himself to, however he abandoned the idea when he couldn't find a way to not make the character into either idiots or assholes and have the story work. Williams then rewokred the idea and did the actual writing, Polski just had to get Story By credits due to guild/legal reasons. One of only two times someone involved with creating an ep has disowned the story I can recall. Also, no this is not a refrence to a team, but a pun on the animal said team is named after.

Awesome episode with one hilarious gag chasing the other. One of my sleeper favorites.

Watching this again here, I enjoyed the episode, but am painfully aware that the writing is not so good here. Spike can be a little clumsy at times, but he was never anywhere near this level. Domestic chores was basically his forte as Twilight's number one assistant. The dragon code is completely out of nowhere and if it were truly something he held so integral to the way he lived his life, it is really weird to first see it now. It's not like cider season for the Apple family which can be dismissed as something that's important but only happens once in a while so wouldn't overall be very prevalent, or even Shining Armor which is a little odd to hear about after two full seasons given how important he apparently was to Twilight, but can be explained away as a case of out of sight, out of mind for a pony that wasn't always the best at social matters. Fun episode if you don't think much about it, but it kind of falls apart when you examine it closer. On a side note, I kind of wonder why they didn't just have Spike breathe fire on the giant timber wolf at the end, one would think that burning a bunch of wood would be a perfect solution for a dragon. Maybe they considered it too violent, even though they already had shown the creatures being smashed to bits multiple times.
