Continuity is hit-or-miss throughout the series. They're pretty good at consistent character growth, and the slice-of-life developments, but they're not great at thinking through all the implications of much of the lore. This did give a good foundation of dragon lore and society, which remains pretty consistent throughout. It's a decent Spike episode (and as you noticed, episodes tend to revolve around one or two particular characters), but gets overshadowed by a lot of the other episodes this season.

Spike growing large due to greed wasn’t the same as him actually reaching a milestone or growing up normally. Zecora mentioned it was an unnatural growth brought on by practicing greed, I feel like that’s why it wasn’t brought up in this episode since this one was more of spike trying to fit in with other normal dragons

I'm sure Spike **really** doesn't want to be reminded of how monstrous he was in Secret of My Excess. The ponies are too kindhearted to bring it up again (despite their teasing). The relationship between Twilight and Spike is an interesting one. He was raised from birth by Twilight, but she's not really a motherly figure to him. He may be her Number One Assistant, but is that all he is? Definitely not. But does he know that? At least he has a pet phoenix. One thing the series does quite well is coming back later to explore things that were discovered in the first few seasons. This will really start to become more apparent in the next season or two (or three). One thing of note: The season finale (Episodes 25 and 26) was considered a pretty big deal back in 2012. Hasbro even hired Tori Spelling to "host" the finale (and spoiled some of the plot points in doing so). At least you get to go in completely blind.

Continuity does not really exist that early in the show. the earlier seasons just kinda establish the world it seems. maybe the early show is more like many single stories, without to much of connections (having X ideas for the show, and just a limited number of episodes to fit in (, before expanding the show length))

As I'm guessing you know now, the greed growth is not 'natural' growth, but magical. It also doesn't answer Spike's questions about who he is or what he's supposed to be. It's not maturity. As TheSlorg mentioned, he's likely very sensitive about what happened and that would probably hurt him more than being seen as soft and cute. . Crackle is awesome. . Yes all dragons are pretty immune to lava and fire (although they can be comically singed) and water and ice don't seem to do much to them either, although they can feel cold after awhile. . Pinkie Pie and Applejack appeared in the beginning. They weren't absent.

Yeah, there is a reason a lot of this didn't make sense, look at the writer. Yup, another Merriwether Williams flop. Granted of her three.... less then well written... season 2 eps, this one isn't so much hated, as just seen as a massive disappointment. A chance to really explore Dragons, to learn about them.... and we just hang out with a bunch of teenage asshole with the episode just saying the entire race isn't worth caring about because clearly they are all like that so ignore them. Plus having the Mane 6 spend the start ragging on and making fun of Spike...... For most of the early seasons most of the writers have their standard quirks and tendancies that stand out. We've covered Williams, MA Larson has some of the most loved and just plain amazing eps of the show. Dave Polsky was known as the big comedy writer, anytime an ep has a ton of slapstick it's a good bet he wrote it, Amy Keating Rogers did some of the most emotional eps of the early seasons. Meghan McCarthy.... If Celestia and Luna are made to look like useless incompetents so Twilight can be the one to save the day, it's likely one of hers. This does kind of taper off in later seasons as they brought on more and more new writers who only got a small handful of eps to write.

FYI, the red dragon who bullied Spike is named Garble.
