Love this episode -- it's so weird. When I drew the line of comparison to Twin Peaks, this episode was definitely one of the things that led me to say that. It's not as consistently in-your-face weird as TP, but it's definitely weird. Your reaction was great. From Butchie losing his shit to the reveal of what happened between Butchie and Cissy (and why Cissy is so brutally mean to everyone). I legit laughed out loud at your "I will talk at the end." There are no real answers here (yet), and I hate to say too much, but this is a bit of my interpretation (the things I can say that aren't spoilers)... Cissy hates herself for what she did and she doesn't believe she deserves forgiveness or love, so she busts on everyone to drive them away. The way John phrases it with surfing is interesting. He draws a line of cause and effect. Mitch wiped out surfing and busted his knee, which caused him to be a complete shit to Cissy. Cissy "shows Butchie how to do that" which "wipes Butchie out" and leads to him striking Barry with the broom. Mr Rollins "wipes Barry out" when he sexually assaults him. All of these events are connected. Mitch busts his knee, Cissy jerks off Butchie, Butchie busts Barry's head, Mr Rollins cums in Barry's face. It didn't HAVE to be this way, but this is the way it all rolled out, a weird wave of cause and effect that rolls over all these folks when they don't hear his "Father's word." As John says, in his Father's word, things could have been different. "In the word on the wall that hears my Father in Cass's camera, the good one Mitch catches doesn't wipe Cissy out. In the word that hears my Father, Cissy shows Butchie something else..." One quote you may have missed is "my Father runs the mega millions," which is the lottery that Barry won. I feel like this indicates that John's father specifically chose Barry to win all of that money so that he could fund the Snug Harbor motel and give jobs to Ramon, Dickstein, etc, as well as home for Butchie and a central location for everyone involved to interact. John is helping to build something that requires all of these people, but it is really unclear what it is. John seems to have some omnispresence. I believe that he really was in all of these places. He was in the van with Bill and Joe. He was at Cissy's house. He was in Cass's hotel. He visited Linc. He was at the Snug Harbor Motel. And moreover, he can bring people along with him as necessary, though they may not precisely remember it. Bill made some comment in the van about how it felt like he'd been "playing his harp" (meaning his harmonica), which is to say that he really was at the Snug Harbor motel while also asleep in the van. That's about all I'm willing to talk about atm. Glad you're enjoying this very weird ride.
