Basically, there were 7 doctors in "Classic" Who, which ran from 1963 - 1989. Then Doctor who ended. This movie was an attempt at rebooting Doctor who in America 1996. It did not spark a series. Then BBC finally rebooted the show in 2005. Since Classic Who ended abruptly, the 7th Doctor , Sylvester McCoy, never had a death/regeneration, he came back and did this movie to transition into a new who era. It's considered the "Americanized" version/episode of Doctor Who. But anyhow... you know what happens from there.
