I'm loving that new quick video upload feature of Patreon! Here are a few raw takes from the recent Sony monitor repair footage I did with TubeTime. It already tells the story. This free donated monitor was completely purple, just unusable. I thought, and hoped, that there was something very wrong with the electronics. But nope, after spending two days on it we could find nothing wrong with the (complicated) electronics. Turns out that TubeTime had a beautiful CRT tube tester in his collection. Neither of us had done a tube rejuvenation before, so we did not know what to expect, nor if we would further destroy our already dead Trinitron tube. But the monitor was a dumpster save freebee (now we knew why), and the tube was a certified goner, so why not. Results were surprising. Not sure how long it will last, but that certainly did something!

Not exactly sure, I’ll have to research this for the video. I believe it creates a controlled discharge between the first anode and the cathode, which vaporizes the layer that’s poisoning the cathode or exposes fresh barium oxide, or something of that ilk. That re-establishes electron emission at the cathode. It’s obviously a very blunt tool, and is no substitue for changing the tube, but we might get a few more 100 hours out of it. Dunno, we’ll see.

Perhaps have a look at Adrian's videos on the subject. He also tried rejuvinating several tubes. (Adrian Black from Adrian's Digital Basement)
