Patron John Lawson recommended this excellent British video. Nice footage of IBM hardware (IBM 7090 computer, 026 card punches, 729 tapes, our cherished IBM 1401 makes an apparition). Some great manufacturing shots, including wire wrapped backplanes, and a lady threading a wire in core memory using a hypodermic needle. Some shots of the British Elliot, and a 1960 version of Google Translate. Great and accurate narration, correctly predicting the future role of computers - and hinting that driving a car is a human a computing operation. Thanks John!

I was still using card punches and readers in my undergrad engineering courses in 1974! And paper tape punch/readers on the PDP 11/03

They still had card punches & readers when I was in college in the late '80s.... One vestige (which is slowly disappearing) of punch cards is the format of boarding passes (the ones printed at the airport). I can still rememeber when they actually had holes in them....
